2020.09.28 17:54 Cult_Of_Razer RazerCon 2020 A Celebration For Gamers. By Gamers.

Hey /Razer,
As the community grows over the years, we have had many fans asking us for meetups outside of the trade shows we’re in. We have also been toying with the idea of having our own convention for a while. With everyone cooped up at home for much of 2020, we thought that it would be fun to bring everyone digitally together (and up on their feets) for a day of fun. With that, we’re excited to announce RazerCon 2020–happening on October 10, 2020 from 8:30AM (PDT) onwards.
Expect to be treated to an exciting line up of events ranging from the latest updates from us, exclusive sneak peeks at upcoming games, and even a metal concert from not just one, but two metal bands. There will also be a ton of giveaways that you can get in on to score exclusive swag, game keys, and hardware provided by us and our partners.
RazerCon 2020 will be streamed live across our Twitch, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter channels on October 10th 2020, from 8:30AM (PST) onwards. Head over to www.razer.com/razercon for more details on what we have planned for you, and how you can participate!

2020.09.27 15:33 Not_A_Bot2020 Doors To Tommorow

Hi everyone!
As I've read lots of misconceptions about this ritual, I want to help out everyone by sharing my experience I just had which I voluntarily turned into a tutorial for everyone. So I had you all in mind when I did this excersize. Now, I went into my bedroom, turned the alarm on for an hour in case I fell asleep (because I don't like to sleep all day). Then I visualized myself in the main hall with five doors. Two on the left, two on the right.
I appeared in a white suit. It's a really nice one too:
http://ak1.ostkcdn.com/images/products/6468364/P14064225.jpg
The reason will become apparent later, I chose this appearance for a good reason.
The hallway is a bit dark, so I guess my subsconsious is already onto me. Silly silly thing that. I turn on the light on the wall and an old electrical chandelier springs to life, shining a warm light over everything. Much nicer. I also see an umbrella stand to my left. I look into it, there's a key down there. Score!
I look at the leftmost door. It's really old and dusty, it looks like it's from some old run-down house. The key fits in the lock too. But the door won't budge. So I push harder and dust falls down from the frame and as I manage to get it open, I'm covered in grey dust. I laugh and dust myself off. After all, nothing stains this suit anyway. So I enter the room, it looks very old with a rocking chair, an old desk and a chair behind that. No windows though. I see the wallpaper has buckled with age. I check the desk and I find a small card that says:
THE MAN IN WHITE Available on call 24/7 for all your DTTM needs!
Oh.. derp, that's my calling hard. I put it in my breast pocket since I'll presenting it later to whomever calls me. Thanks subconscious, nice one!
I exit the room and go back into the hall. The righthand door is interesting. It has the picture of a clock on it. I open the door that swings up on oiled hinges. I enter and it's full of clocks, everywhere I see there's a clock of some kind. They're all different though. Some are old and disgusting. Some are modern and look like they came from a garbage dump. I touch them all to prove a point. Time is time. I see one that looks especially evil, it has pentagrams. I give it a kiss and remember the truly bad times in my life. But this is only time, it can't hurt me and it can't hurt anyone else. On my way out, I see a black cat with yellow eyes, I say hi and it brushes up against my leg. I laugh bend down and pet it. Poor cat, being trapped in here with all my old memories. So I pick it up and it starts purring. On my way out I spot my old wrist watch I lost when I was a teen. Since I don't have my mobile phone here (what use would it have anyway?) I put on the watch and walk out of the door.
So, two doors down, three to go. The upper left one looks interesting, it's pure white metal of somekind. Looks like primarily silver with some nice texturing. Oh inlaid crystals? This is gotta be interesting. I open the door which feels very heavy and enter the room. And it's a nicely furnished room that has a bed, a square table and two chairs. There's posters hanging on the walls of some kind of artists. I guess this is some kinda retro thing. I look at the posters but don't recognize any of the artists. Some guy with a poodle hairdo and guitar, two girls singing at a mic, a landscape picture with a band name superimposed over it. Regular stuff. I see a window to the right, but it's painted black. I go there and open it, it leads into a void. I poke my head out through the window and look around. There's absolutely nothing there. Oh well, worth a try anyway. The cat jumps out of my hands and goes up on the bed and goes to sleep. Oh well, you'll be better off here anyway.
I go back to the hallway and look at the upper right door and when I do, the chandelier starts buzzing and the light dims for a few seconds. Yup, that door is REALLY bad business. So I walk up to it and see that it's made of old carved black wood. It's inlaid with carvings of glyphs that are filled with .. yep, it's dried blood of somekind. Now, everybody would stay away from this door, I think to myself. But I'm not. I try and open it but it won't budge. It's a nicely done door, so I don't want to kick it open though. As I'm starting to wonder if I should chant something, I feel something brush up against my leg. It's the cat of course. It looks up at me and now I see it has a key around it's collar. I squat and I smile and take the key from the collar, pet the cat and tell it it was a good girl and that it should go back to bed. Seemingly satisfied with it's role being filled, it returns to the retro room.
I turn back to the door which now has begun bleeding. I put the key in the lock and turn it and it makes this incredibly disgustingly squishy sound. I check my pockets and find a napkin, I use it to push open the door. The smell that comes out is putrid to say the least. But I walk in none the less. Inside is like a slaughterhouse. Hooks hanging from the ceiling with half mutilated bodies on them, heads mounted on the walls, arms and legs on the floor, blood absolutely everywhere. There's no ceiling, only a grid further up where light filters through.
I go in and I look at all the bodies, all their eyes are closed. I tell myself that this is pretty creepy stuff alright. I take a walk around the room and take in the details, there's things written in blood in every language I know and in some I don't even know if it's just random symbols or not. I pass by a woman torso that's apparently engulfed from the waist up. Her arms are suspended in a Y by chains hanging from the ceiling. She's covered in blood and has been obviously tortured quite a bit. As I walk by, her head jerks up and opens her eyes... well actually her eyesockets since her eyes have been removed. She still looks at me and says "You've entered here although you shouldn't. You have now met us." and by the point she says us, every face in the room opens it's eyes and focuses on me. She continues "we are all that is dark, all that is evil, we want nothing good for you, we simply want to destroy you, to kill you, to put you into the same state we are in. We are forever, we will always loom in this place and be ready for you"
Before she can continue, I put my finger to her lips and silence her. I say "Listen, you have no power here. Yes, you're frightening to look at, but you can't do anything to me." She hisses back and tries to bite my finger. Then she says "you're full of shit and your post will be full of shit too" I laugh and I tell her that oh well, at least she has a nice rack. I then challenge the room and I ask it to do it's worst. Blood starts seeping from the walls and I see a shadow flit by the grating above. But apart from that, nothing else happens because I refuse to be intimidated in my own world. Scared and unnerved yes, but never dominated. I look back on the woman and I softly say "You were very beautiful once weren't you? Here, let me help you." I stretch out my hand and touch hers and I pull her out of the wall as I free from the chains. As she emerges, all her wounds heal and a nice blue dress manifests. Wow, she's truly a stunner. She looks at me and is surprised. She looks down at her body and back to me. I say "See? Things are better when you work together. Now, go free the rest of these trapped souls in there. You can leave to somewhere nice if you take the door on the other wall. (And now there is a door on the wall that reads "To The Happy Places")
Kind of stunned at the development, she goes and helps her partners in crime by touching them, as she touches each of them, they heal and spread it onward as they start leaving through the other door I decide it's time to leave. As I try and leave the room though, the door slams shut in front of me and glows menacingly red. I try and open it and it refuses to budge. An evil laughter comes from it and it says "I'll never let you out, you're going to die in here" I punch the door which refuses to budge. At this point, I smile and I say "Listen, this is my mind, my rules and my domain. My will is absolute" and to make a point, I punch myself through the wall back into the hallway. I also rip the door of it's hinges and throw it on the floor in the middle of the hallway. I look back into the creepy room and see the girl waving goodbye with a nice happy grin on her face as she closes the door to the happy places.
I turn my attention back to the door and say "you're such a riot that I think I'll make you a permanent part of my starting hallway from now on." So I lift up the door and now notice it has a face on it that shrieks at me and threatens all manner of evil and ghastly things. I hang it on the wall, take a step back and look at it.. I adjust a bit to the left. There.. perfect! As it babbles I laugh at it, it's now no more than a funny prop I have for my amusement. I look at the door and say "I think you need a name... yes, I think I'll call you Satan because you're so cute" The only reply back I get is a string of curses and some latin crap and other assorted threats.
Turning my attention to the last door in the hallway, it's a normal grey one and I open it up. Behind it is a room with an easel and some painting supplies. There's a video camera pointed towards the easel too. It takes me a bit before I get the joke and I laugh to myself, then I see a message written in Phtalo Blue on the canvas which I think is intended for all of you out there: "There are only happy accidents"
And at that time, I decided it was time to wake up so I did just that. It was a nice half hour of a rest.
So, the point of my excersize is to first assure everyone that you cannot possibly mess this up unless you tack on some other mystical stuff onto it. Really, don't, because it's only a stupid risk to do that. There is nothing dangerous in these hallways and rooms, scary and unnvering, yes, but dangerous? Never, it's in your mind.
But, just in case you all need some help, you can always just say to yourself "Hey, Man In White, I think I need some help here" or something and I'll show up and bail you out. I will always wear my suit and I will always introduce myself with a smile and a little bow and present my calling card. (Don't worry, you can keep it, I have infinite amounts of them after all)
So I wish you all happy exploring, it's a really fascinating thing when your subconscious starts to throw things at you. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's just annoying. But you'll learn a lot about yourself and how you think when you're in there.
TL:DR: DTTM isn't dangerous.
Edit: Also, if anyone wants some tips on things to do in your newfound world, I can share a lot of fun things you could try.

2020.09.27 12:10 Jack_f_Spades Price Targets for Upcoming SPAC's 2020-2021

This list has been created for most popular SPAC's. I have placed some realistic price targets on the most common SPAC's that have a merger partner. If anyone has any suggestions to update current targets or the ones that I have not yet placed a target on, please make a comment and I will update accordingly (I will always give credit to anyone who provides solid views/arguments when I update the data). Also, if hype increases/decreases or new information is released for any particular SPAC, I will update price target accordingly. Lastly, once a company merges, I will minimize/italicize those tickers, but keep them on the list so that we can track targets for similar future SPAC's.

* = Short (pre-post merger: 2 weeks max); ** = Long (2-5 years)
***These are estimated targets based on current/future valuations, financials, demand, upcoming catalysts, market volatility, prior stock movements, what the retail and institutional investors are doing on a weekly basis, competition, IP, industry position, dominance in a particular category. Please understand that these are just guesses as no one really can predict an accurate target. Some targets were placed to the lower side due to current volatility and other factors that negatively impact markets (upcoming election, trade issues, stimulus talks, increases in COVID cases, possible vaccine approvals, etc). Note: any positive news post merger may increase stock price.
Please do your DD! It's hard for me to put all the supporting data that I have on these companies as this would make my post incredibly long and not sure if my time spent on writing everything up will actually pay off and people will actually read it. I will however, work on putting down links for each supportive evidence I can gather on each SPAC. Please note, this will take some time... If anyone has any supportive data, I will add to the post. Thank you!
*** Please note, I will be updating data continuously; supportive evidence may come in the form of links ***

- Short: hard to predict current PT as stock is not popular due to controversy with Fertitta's reasons to go public with the company. Stock market indicators point to current lack of popularity in this stock.- Long: prior earnings were above expectations with more people under quarantine gambling online; I expect the next quarter to be a positive surprise as well. *** Notes for next week: (09/28/20 to 10/02/20)- please be careful with SHLL. I see a lot of institutional selling from last week (not sure if that was due to volatility and stop losses being triggered or if firms just took profits before the merger).- similar story goes for FMCI. Tread lightly.I am aware there were issues with not enough votes for both of these SPAC's, but I don't believe that more experienced investors (institutional) would bail when the votes were close.

2020.09.26 23:23 AngryaboutVideogames Frozen Homes Pt 35: A Spiky Boi

Saturday Release!

[First] [Prev] [Next] [Wiki]

Thanks for taking the time to read the story, Hope you enjoy it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Commander Soto slammed himself into the wall, dodging a few beams of that ugly laser fire the enemy combatants used. With their weapons unlocked and the idea of prisoners abandoned, the way towards the bridge had been much more manageable. Not to mention the Aasteran soldiers seemed eerily excited to be killing these alien slavers.
Watching from his cover as Ranarus charged an enemy encampment with nothing but his shield and grav sword. His eyes widened in amusement as the soldier jumped over a metal barricade and proceeded to tear apart the enemy. Going so far as to skewer two of the aliens with his tail, as he slashed into another three with his sword. "Guess that explains the tail spikes they have."
Soto walked down the corridor, lazily holding his shield in front of him as he stalked towards the encampment, contemplating whether to kill the remaining slaver or capture it. Thankfully, his decision was made for him as an Aasteran soldier furiously charged forward, bellowing a primal war cry. Aggressively stomping his right foot and thrusting his tail through the alien, Soto just nodded and looked to his side. "You guys really love doing that." He commented to the nearest Aasteran, who just shrugged and moved on.
Ranarus walked up beside Commander Soto and waved it off. "We have a lot of pent up rage against these things."
"Hey, I get it. You guys can finally avenge your ancestors, right?" Soto replied, looking at his tac map.
"More like my people, these things caused us much suffering. To see them use whatever these diamonds are as some living battery. It tells me more about this civilisation than I would like to know." Looking at the stolen cart carefully filled with the silicon bodies. Ranarus's anger once again boiled. "We can't even tell if they're still alive, they're so weak."
"BRACE!"
Ranarus leaned against the wall as the ship violently shook, looking at his team report to ensure that none of his party was injured as he gathered his footing. " What was that?"
Commander Soto looked over to the cart then back to Ranarus. "Team six took out the weapons storage in the fighter hangar. Well, what they consider a fighter. We have civilian ships with more armour and shielding on them." Motioning for the group to reform, Commander Soto began following his tac map towards the assumed bridge located middle of the ship.
Taking point with his shield and grav mace, Soto began following his map points, making sure to keep his team behind him before being pushed aside by Ranarus and his team as they stalked forward ahead of the Terrans. Looking back at his team, Soto decided to take a back seat to the action, figuring he would leave most of the killing to his new allies. They seemed to be pretty good at it and almost needed to get some vengeance out of their system even if he would eventually get in trouble for it.
"Hey, there's some atmosphere on the other side of this door!" A marine shouted.
Quickly moving over to his scanner tech, Soto looked at the readout and waved at Ranarus, who happened to be busy pulling one of his men off a mutilated body. "Hey, uh, I'm pretty sure what you're going to say. But, did your people have anything with a bio scan similar to this on your planet?"
Ranarus looked at the scan in confusion. "Nope, I've never seen blood like that before. I don't even know what kind of metal that blood contains."
Soto scrunched his face and waved the entire boarding group over. "Ok, we got some bio signs in this room, oxygen breathers, not these vacuum fucks. Scanners indicate that they're hurt, we think. The plan, we set up a shield to keep the air in, blow open the door, rush in and subdue the bio signs if they're aggressive. It's looking like we won't beat team two to the bridge anyway, so let's bag us some captives."
Watching as the team's engineer set up the shield, Soto opened a com so he could listen to the other boarding groups, many of who were venting their anger out on these odd aliens with weapons typically not used inside ships. Thankfully, most of the ship was already under Union control with only the bridge and a few hold outs left, most of which were being utterly decimated by mobile lance batteries.
"Shields up!" Reported his team's engineer.
Watching as the charges were set, Soto and Ranarus moved up to take point. "Ready pal?" Commander Soto asked, already knowing the response.
Ranarus looked at the rest of his team before back to the commander. "I was born to kill my people's enemies, not capture them. I will follow your lead."
Soto chuckled at the unexpected answer. "We'll have to work on that." As the charge countdown hit zero and the door blew open, Soto hefted his shield and charged into the room, looking for his target. "Nothing's here."
Ranarus rushed in and looked towards the location of the bio signs. "No, they're here." Picking up some fallen debris, Ranarus chucked it at a gathering of three spiky masses.
Commander Soto watched as the spiky ball rippled, making off cooing noises before quickly silencing itself. "Is it a porcupine?" Slowly reaching out to touch a quill, his suit began to scream warnings as the point pierced through his armour and into his under mesh. Surprised, he pulled his hand back in shock as the nanites plugged the hole. Soto stared in amazement at the spiky ball as his suit finished up it's complaining. " Holy shit, No way we're cuffing this guy."
"You'd be dead if it's quill were coated in poison, you realise." Looking at the tac com updates, Ranarus deflated as the ship was considered subdued and under Union control. "So, what is it, some pet?"
Waving his teams medic up, Soto looked back at Ranarus and shrugged, "dunno, the doc will figure it out, for now, let's make sure our diamond friends get plenty of light... Feels like I'm talking about a plant."
Watching as the medic waved his hands around and worked his healing magic, Soto was beginning to think he had more bad news heading his way as the doctor started frantically cursing and attempting to get around the quills of the creature. "What's wrong, doc?"
"It's a fucking sentient. It's malnourished and dehydrated though... I think... Its blood is filled with some weird metal that's interfering with my scans. The quills, I think they're quills, something is off about them; they're pumped full of the metal too. Overall thoughts, though... I think those fucks were using this guys blood for something, they're all missing a lot, or just.. don't need a lot compared to both Terran and Aasteran."
Soto palmed his face and let out a low groan. "What kind of sector of the galaxy is this. We spend two thousand years looking for life only to run into cold snakes and fucking cosmic boogeymen slavers, four-armed balls living in vacuum, enslaving everything they come across? I don't think the people back home are going to like any of this. No offence Ranarus, your people are great, but this is bullshit."
Ranarus shook his head and looked at the spiky alien. "None taken, no one asked for any of this."
"Got it! I can give them some anaesthetics until we can get them to a secure med bay. Uh, with your permission, commander. I'm sure they'll make it, but its better safe than sorry with the state they're in."
Commander Soto nodded and looked down at the trio of porcupines. "Do it if you're sure it won't hurt them. I want to make sure they're alive for questioning."
Soto held his breath as he watched the medic pour the medical nanites between the tightly packed quills. Shifting his visual spectrum to get a better look as the quills quivered, as if fighting to stay rigid before completely separating and softening into fine hair. "It's a fucking spiky boy!" Soto shouted.
Ranarus looked at the Terrans curiously as they started making all sorts of soft noises at the alien." What's a spiky boy?"
"It's not a dog! It's a wolf." Replied the medic.
"What kind of wolf is red, its a big ass fox, dumb-ass!" Shouted a marine from the crowd.
"They got red dogs on the Kuacog colony idiot!" Came another.
"You guys do know it's sentient, right? Like a thinking being." Argued the tech.
Regaining himself, commander Soto looked to the medic. "Sedate the other two. I want to make sure these guys get the help they need."
Ranarus look on in confusion as the marines quickly quieted, looking at the trio of aliens. "Something wrong here I should know about?
Finishing up relaying his information to the rest of the boarding teams, commander Soto looked over to Ranarus. "It's good that most of the aliens are dead. But if you find one alive, kill it before a Terran sees it."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Srettia screamed in horror as Michael skilfully flew through the hull of a wrecked enemy cruiser, a successful gambit at losing the fighter wing that managed to get behind him. " I COULD HAVE DESTROYED THEM YOU, IDIOT!"
Rolling the ship out of the wreckage and manoeuvring to rejoining his bomber wing, Michael grinned and looked over to his terrified passenger. "True, but I felt like having some fun."
"Well, our guest enjoyed itself."
"At least someone's on my side." Michael complained as his bomber wing worked their way towards their target.
Srettia turned to look at the being as it chimed a jaunty tune at her, its arms splayed as if it was on some sort of ride. "We need to name this thing."
"It has its name; we just need to figure out how to communicate. Incoming forty seven mark three, four interceptors are heading towards the bombers."
Srettia turned back to her weapons controls and began to rain anti mater upon the poor ships, chuckling as they broke apart from just the vicinity of the lance fire. "I can get used to this."
"We are approaching our target. I am marking it on the display. Torpedos ready, waiting for wing commander's mark."
Michael frowned as the visual came up, and he saw the swarm of fighters around the massive carrier. "That's a big guy."
"You scared partner?"
Srettia fired off a few shots and laughed. "He's scared. Big bad Terran ace pilot afraid of paper fighters."
"Har, har. Have a good laugh." Pulling a hard turn to avoid a particularly nasty volley, Michael just shook it off and voiced his thoughts. "I'm more worried about why they are bent on protecting that ship. What's in it?"
"Unknown. Fleet command needs it destroyed so Chrarada can take her fleet to secure a captured command ship."
Srettia grinned at the thought of Chrarada screaming as her ship charged its target. "Well, lets clear the way for our beautiful leader, shall we?"
"I did not know you thought her beautiful."
"Well, duh. Her horns are always perfectly polished, and her scales are as glossy as a newborn." Srettia angrily fired some shots into a passing frigate as the squadron pierced the defensive screen and sighed. " It's unfair."
"We're coming up on the target, get ready." Rolling under a cruiser with the squad, Michael snuck a look at Srettia and frowned." How about I pick up some moisturiser and polish for you when we get back to Leda. You can take the evening off to relax and let me pamper you for the night."
Srettia fought to keep her tail still, at the thought. "We shall do that."
"Target in range thirteen seconds, Torpedos ready."
Michael looked at the being who began chiming an oddly deep tune and looked back at the ship. "I don't like this."
"Firing Torpedos."
Michael watched as the bomber squadron unleashed tens of high yield anti-matter torpedos at the massive carrier, observing as they crashed into the hull, ripping it apart and sending pieces splintering through the surrounding vessels, completely breaking the enemy formation. "Invest in better fighters, you idiots."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Charge forward! Breakthrough their lines and destroy all who get in our way!" Changing her fleet formation from a three-pointed claw into an arrowhead, Chrarada bought her ship to the front of the tip as her fleet advanced into the hole created by the Terran bomber squadron. "I'll need to request a fleet of those bombers.."
Attempting to keep the emotion off her face as her ship unleashed a vicious broadside into the enemy formation while it crashed through the debris of the massive ship. Chrarada noted that the enemy command ship changed from contested to secure and smirked. " Our males have completed their task, increase speed to secure the target ship, we can't let the enemies destroy it!" Watching as more of the hard light aliens extracted themselves from the debris of the battlefield, Chrarada scoffed in frustration. "What kind of enemy are we fighting."
"Ma'am, the enemy fleet is breaking off, looks like a pretty ugly retreat."
Chrarada slammed her fist against her console in anger. "FIGHT ME, COWARDS!" Looking around at her bridge crew who had similar thoughts, Chrarada took a deep breath to compose herself and fought off the urge to chase after the retreating enemies. "Take up position around the captured ship, destroy what you can in the meanti-."
"Detecting massive energy surge from enemy wreckage!"
"Bring it up on visual." Chrarada watched closely as the carrier wreckage seemed to sparkle for a few moments, lights shimmering in multiple locations before merging into a massive hard light alien, twice no three times the size of her ship. "Ah, I can see why they're running."
Just as the alien finally finished forming into an odd funnel shape, Chrarada felt a cold chill run down her spine and opened a com to her fleet. " ALL POWER TO SHIELDS, NOW! EVERY OUNCE YOU CAN SPARE!"
Just as she finished relaying her commands, Chrarada watched in horror as the alien unleashed a massive beam of energy. One that rushed past her fleet and split into tens of smaller offshoots, shearing ships in half while destroying others. Shaking off her stress, Chrarada opened another com to her fleet in panic. "Stay out of its way. We secure the enemy ship with a tractor and get out of this area, NOW!"
Upon finally reaching her target, Chrarada shuddered as the energy readings on the large alien once again began to spike. " Get a tractor on the ship and leave the area immediately. We don't have time!"
Holding her breath as her fleet activated their tractors and began pulling the enemy ship from the battlefield, Chrarada watched curiously as another beam of light emerged from the alien, shaking her ship as it passed by to its intended targets. "Relay to the fleet command that our mission is complete."
Exhaling in relief, Chrarada authorised docking of the boarding teams into her fleet, tapping her tail angrily as the enemy fleet fled the system.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ranarus walked off the boarding ship with his Terran teammates into the familiar sight of an Aasteran hangar bay as emergency personal flooded into the ships. Taking off his helmet Ranarus laughed as the Terrans threw down their own and rubbed their faces and hair. "Smells like home."
Soto walked up beside Ranarus and clapped him on the shoulder. "Good job, friend. It looks like some ladies are looking your way." Soto pointed to a section of the hangar where medical personal and armour specialists were waiting. "Any of them catch your eye? Bet you can finally have the luxury of being the one to claim."
Ranarus laughed and pointed at a Cyan female who pushed aside the other females and stalked towards Commander Soto. "Maybe, But I heard you're familiar with that one."
Soto palmed his face as the female approached. "Yeah, She claimed me after a demonstration. She beat the crap out of a green one that tried to challenge her for it or something."
Ranarus watched as the Female captain got up in Soto's face and began marking him with her tongue. "Well, have fun, commander. I hear the fangs are painless."

Soto looked at Ranarus in shock then at the very long tongue rolling around his body. "Ahh fuck it." Ejecting himself out of his armour, Soto effortlessly picked up the cyan female. Walking off happily towards the hangar exit as she clung onto him, ignoring his whooping and cheering team.

2020.09.26 21:24 Kargi8499 [A3][Event][NA/EU] RCT-7 Presents: TF Tiger Cycle 20 FTX 15 Sunday @ 3PM EST

[A3][Event][NA/EU] RCT-7 Presents: TF Tiger Cycle 20 FTX 15 Sunday @ 3PM EST
Regimental Combat Team 7 is part of 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade’s (MEB) Task Force Tiger, stationed at Tuvanaka as SEATO’s garrison to counter CSAT influence in the South Pacific.

Overview of TO (Theater of Operations) in 1 kilometer squared grids, highlighting towns and terrain features around the Tuvanaka Island. Pictures, mission and write up created by Kargi.

*** OPORD ***

1. SITUATION:
a. Area of Interest; The Horizon Islands government in Georgetown in combination with the Gendarmerie are looking to crack down on bandit activities across the Northern Division. Unilateral action has been called upon by local community leaders and Blue Pearl Industry, the latter being the single largest employer in the archipelago of Tanoa. From extortion to kidnapping, these bandits have made life on these seemingly idyllic islands tragic for locals and require stamping out. Corruption plays a major part in fueling the endless money, arms and recruits to these bandits.
b. Area of Operations;
(1) Terrain - Rolling hills, mostly jungle (double canopy), patches of open fields with towns and cities located along the MSR.
(2) Weather - Sunny with no chance of overcast.
c. Enemy Forces;
(1) Composition, Disposition, and Strength - These bandits are known as an unorganized localized gang like tribe, numbering no more than a couple hundred across the entire Northern Division islands.
(2) Recent Activities - A rash of strong armed robberies have hit urban centers with strong indications it is in fact these bandit tribes. Paired this with cattle and crop theft have created real economic hardships for the local populace. Things escalated on Thursday (9/24/20) with the disappearance of two Blue Pearl Industry who were prospecting in the island village of Sosovu for precious metals for a new mine. It is suspected that they have been kidnaped by local bandits and being held for ransom. Said extortion has yet to take place.
(3) Locations and Capabilities - MCCYWG reports have found that most locations of these bandits are static discrete safe houses in urban centers or well fortified country villas that remain normal looking to any aerial/satellite reconnaissance but from Gendarmerie reports, as violent and armed facilities to operate out of. The use of civilian vehicles is their preferred method of transport with the occasional up armored technical encountered.
(4) Enemy COAs (Courses of Action) - As narcotics being a staple of income for most banit militias, expect high probability of violence and a determined advisory with the ability of utilizing SUT in terrain found throughout the archipelago.
d. Friendly Forces;
(1) Higher HQ Mission and Intent - To prepare and equip the MAGTF with enhanced fighting capabilities in anticipation of further deployments, serve as a strategic garrison to shun CSAT regional influence all while continuing to build relations with the local populace and government.
(2) Mission of Adjacent Units - The Gendarmerie of Horizon Islands are at the behest of Task Force C&C to facilitate expansion of training facilities and extra external security to the garrison.
e. Attachments and Detachments; N/A.
2. MISSION: On 9/27/20 at 1400 LST, TF Tiger will conduct a show of force motorized patrol down Rout BASILONE in support of Gendarmerie checkpoints with the intent of interdicting any bandit activity along the MSR.

Map of AO (Area of Operations) in 1 kilometer squared grids. Pictures, mission and write up created by Kargi.
3. EXECUTION:
a. Commander's Intent; To use this FTX to work integration of the Gendarmerie into TF Tigers contingent partnered force playbook by assisting them in a supporting capacity.
b. Concept of Operations;
(1) Maneuver - This operation will be conducted in three phases. Phase 1 will encompass the integration of new technology (CTab) to GCE/ACE. The objective of Phase 1 is to make sure key bindings and SOPs for tablets are established. Phase 2 will have GCE mounted in M1043A2’s and begin the motorized movement down Route BASILONE (grids 0112, 0111 and 0211) with ACE providing overwatch. The objective of Phase 2 is to stop at each checkpoint encountered and facilitate any support the checkpoint Gendarmerie Commander may require. GCE/ACE will begin Phase 3 which is to egress backup to Tuvanaka Airbase with the objective of safely returning all GCE/ACE for debrief. Time table for all missions outside Tuvanaka Airbase to be no more than 2 hours. Mission launch code word is “DRIVER”.
(2) Fires - The timetable for this operation has limited flexibility to cover things outlined in section 3b.(1). Throughout this operation, METT-TC in conjunction with ROE (see section 3e(1) below) will dictate any firing solutions for both GCE and ACE.
(3) Reconnaissance and Surveillance - ACE will provide aerial reconnaissance throughout the operation and update status on map of possible OPFOR movements. Draw/marker signals to correspond with SOP.
c. Casualty Evacuation; Any GCE casualties will respawn at the CSH Unit and await reinsert from ACE. Any ACE casualties will respawn at BAS ACE.
d. Tasks to Combat Support;
(1) Fire Support - Bulldog has access to 3x M119A2.
(2) Air Defense - 2x UH-1Y and 2x AH-1Z are available for HMLA-367. Pylon refit is available at Service Center (ACE) and the USS Khe Sanh (LHD-9).
e. Coordinating Instructions;
(1) Rules of Engagement - All weapons will be made to condition one before crossing the line of departure. GCE/ACE will not fire unless fired upon. To limit collateral damage, any engagements in urban centers are not to be escalated. GCE/ACE will break contact to reassess and allow the Gendarmerie to take point. ACE is restricted to engaging only targets that pose imminent anti aircraft threat or are clear of causing the aforementioned collateral. Any additional ACE support must be approved by Spartan 1-6 Actual before JFO coordinates action.
4. SUSTAINMENT:
a. Logistics;
(1) Sustainment Overlay - Three supply aresneals are available by Service Center (GCE).
(2) Transportation - ACE will provide reinerts for GCE to AO. HLZ’s to be determined by Spartan 1-6 Actual and JFO.

Map of AO (Area of Operations) in 100 meters squared grids. Pictures, mission and write up created by Kargi.
5. COMMAND AND CONTROL:
a. Command;
(1) Location of Commander - Throughout the operation, Spartan 1-6 Actual will be with the inspection tour as they move.
(2) Succession of Command - If Spartan 1-6 Actual is KIA and awaiting reinsert, C&C will be passed to Spartan 1-1 Actual and then to Spartan 1-2 Actual in the event Spartan 1-1 Actual is KIA as well.
b. Control;
(1) Command Posts - For Phase 1,2 and 3, CP’s will be relative to 1st Platoons current location and/or objectives met. You may call in a LOCSTAT for Spartan 1-6 but consult your BLUFOR Tracker. Phase 3 is subject to the scheme of maneuver (see section 3b.(1)) so again call for a LOCSTAT and consult your BLUFOR Tracker.
(2) Reports - Timeline for reports will be dictated in the final brief of GCE commanders and will coincide with the scheme of movement.

2020.09.26 01:59 delta-201 [Melas] - Chapter 61: Saved and Spent

Synopsis:
A young woman finds herself dead and is given the chance to reincarnate in another world with cheat-like magic powers. She accepts, only to find that the world treats magic users the same way ours did— by hunting them down and killing them for heresy.
My name is MELAS?! As in Salem backwards? Oh my God, and my mother is a Witch. I am SO going to be burned at the stake!

Water, earth, fire, fire, air, earth, fire, air.
Earth, air, fire, air, fire, water, earth.
Water, fire, air, water.
I glanced down at the final combination of symbols; it was not a common sight to see water paired with fire, since the two were supposed to be diametrically opposed in their real elemental forms. But this was simply a representation— the symbols were named as such because they roughly resembled the elements, however they were not the direct equivalence of said elements.
The theory behind these symbols was a result of complex observations, with its origins stemming from the Great Hero Xander himself. There were basic fundamental rules to creating working runes to draw the power out of a mana crystal— such as how increasingly complex polygons made out of the fire symbol would generally increase the energy drawn from the mana crystal— yet it was entirely possible to create a brand new, working rune out of a random shape with an arbitrary arrangement of the symbols.
So far, I had been making simple shapes: ones that had been studied thoroughly and was good for training, but had little practical use for real mana tools. It was like learning calculus as a mathematics major hoping to pursue a Doctorate in Mathematics in the future— I had a long way to go before I could create the kinds of tools my Dwarven companion did.
I was diligent, but I was not a genius.
I picked the piece of paper up, and inspected it carefully; there were no mistakes that I could see, which instilled in me a sense of accomplishment. I proudly laid the sheet back down onto the table, admiring my work for just a moment longer.
Then the door to the room swung open, and I craned my neck away from the paper lain on the desk to see Gennady enter the room. The rotund man strutted in, his heavy footfalls thumping on the hard wooden floor as he lifted his hood.
“Welcome back,” I greeted him, standing up and stretching my back after being seated for over an hour.
“Ya are one studious kid, you know that right?” he commented as he peered over my shoulder. “Good job. You got everything right this time.”
I was just about to grin in response when the Dwarf smacked me across the back. Ouch, still not used to that. I rubbed the spot and the light sting quickly went away. Then I finally asked the question that had been in my mind.
“So,” I started, “how did it go?”
“Other than the fact that I had to keep even lower than I usually am? Pretty damned good if I had to say so myself.”
He placed both hands on his bed, and hefted himself up onto it; he pulled out a small metallic flask and drank from it.
“I managed to speak to a few guys, and they said they could arrange a meeting between us and these two smugglers. They’re one of the best in the city.”
I lifted an eyebrow, and tilted my head to the side. “Are they trustworthy though?” I asked. “That’s more important than how good they are at their job. They could be amazing, but if they betray us, it doesn’t matter.”
The Dwarf furrowed his brows, and sighed. “Lass, has anyone ever told you that you are sometimes very paranoid?”
“What’s wrong with erring on the side of caution?”
“Nothing.” He shook his head and stood up. “I hear that they’ve never failed a job. But the thing is, they’re used to smuggling goods out and into the city, not people. There isn’t much illegal slave trafficking coming out of Luke by sea, and people who try to flee the country generally do so through land by the southern border.” He took another swig of his alcohol.
“Good,” I said, nodding curtly. “I prefer it that way. I’d rather not deal with slavers or people who aid slavers. It just doesn’t sit well with me.”
“Because it’s illegal?”
“Because it’s evil,” I corrected the Dwarf, before changing topics. “So, where will we be meeting these smugglers?”
“They have a hideout in a tavern near the docks. That’s on the northern side of the harbor, so we won’t have to worry about running into too much trouble, I hope.”
Right, trouble, I thought, remembering the reason why Gennady had to wear that cloak over his head, and I was staying in the inn by myself: there were very angry sailors on the lookout for us— as confirmed by Gennady— after the incident at the main pier area a few days ago. And it did not help that we tricked the guards to buy us some time so we could escape.
Were we wanted by the guards for tricking them? Probably not. However, picking a fight with dozens of sailors was probably against some law in Laxis, which meant that the city guards were keeping at least one eye out for us; we were not criminals, but there was most definitely a hefty fine we had to pay for partaking in a brawl.
Gennady wanted to avoid paying it if we could, and I did not disagree with that sentiment. So due to both those reasons, we were keeping on the down low while searching for a way out of this city.
I walked over to the closet, and pulled out my ‘Aria’ disguise. “Well then, let’s get going,” I said to the Dwarf.
He frowned, scratching his scruffy beard. “Right now?” he asked. “I arranged a meeting for tonight.”
“We want to scout out the place first, of course,” I replied casually, taking off my pointed hat. “Plus, I’m sick and tired of being locked up in this room. Maybe I can look around for anything I might want to buy in the market. You’ve bought your Superior mana crystals, well I want something of my own too.”
“Aight, if that’s what you want.” Gennady gave a noncommittal shrug.
“Now, if you’ll excuse me,” I said, gesturing at the door. “Could you please get out?” I held my change of clothes up, indicating I needed some privacy.
“Right.” He hurriedly left the room.

I carefully inspected the array of mana crystals before me, reaching for one that was about the size of my hand and held it up against the lamplight. The blue-green gemstone glimmered, reflecting the shine into my eyes; it was bright.
I had read in A Tinkerer's Guide— one of the books Gennady had loaned me— that mana crystals of higher quality had highly reflective surfaces whereas lower quality mana crystals did not. This was due to the difference in the mana density inside each crystal, with an increase in mana leading to a more opaque body that allows less light to pass through. And yet, it was easy to mistake the light refracting through a translucent mana crystal as light being reflected on its surface, which often caused many without a discerning enough eye to be scammed out of their silver or gold.
I squinted, making a hole with my fingers and looking through it as though it would help me see better; it did, but by a small margin. I was almost certain that this mana crystal was worth its price— it was a Lesser mana crystal of ostensibly high quality costing 6 gold coins: that seemed like a steal to me.
“Hey Gennady,” I called out to my Dwarven companion. “Is this one any good?”
“That?” He frowned, and took the mana crystal out of my hand; he scrutinized it for a moment, then waved his hand dismissively. “Bah, it’s only a Lesser, and it’s barely above average. Maybe for its price it’s good, but otherwise I wouldn’t buy it.”
I nodded. “Thanks,” I said, and turned to the store owner. “I’ll take it.”
The woman smiled eagerly, rubbing her hands together as I completed the transaction; I managed to haggle the price down to 5 gold and 10 silver— it was only a two silver discount, but that was worth over a dozen meals, or a few nights in most regular inns.
I returned to Gennady as he crossed his thick arms over his broad chest; I inclined my head to the side. “What?” I asked.
“I told you not to buy it— it wasn’t even a good,” he said.
“Are you saying it’s not good because it’s not a Superior mana crystal, or are you saying it’s not good because I was scammed out of my money?”
“Well, uh, it’s...” the Dwarf stammered, scratching the side of his beard. “I was more leaning towards the former,” he finally said.
“Exactly.” I smiled, and placed a hand on his right shoulder. “I got it because it was what I was looking for, and you told me it’s good for its price. I was taking your advice, don’t worry.”
“But if you’re planning on getting a mana crystal to practice with, you should at least start with Inferiors, not Lessers,” he objected.
“I’m not planning on using this just yet,” I said, placing the blue-green gemstone into a small pouch, and tying it closed. I attached it to my leather belt, and strolled past Gennady. “It’s not for practice now. It’s for when we’re at sea and I’ve already mastered working on Inferiors. I’m planning ahead.” I gestured for him. “Come on,” I said, “let’s get going. We don’t want to be late.”
We left the shop and headed towards the docks; we passed by ships that were not currently being used— many of them looked as though they had been left in disrepair for months— while others seemed as though they were having improvements added onto them. It was mostly empty of life however, since it was evening, and the little noise we heard came from the nearby bars, taverns, or inns which were beginning to teem with life at the end of twilight.
I followed Gennady as we made our way through the cobble street, finally stopping a block away from our destination. “There it is,” he said. “The Merlion’s Alcove.”
I glanced at the small, wooden building; it was a much more subdued tavern than the ones we had seen on the way here, yet there were clearly suspicious people making their way for this spot. With a name like that and with people as shady as this, you really can’t be more obvious that this is a cover!
“Let’s take a look around,” I said.
We spent the next hour loitering around the area; the brilliant vermillion sunset was covered over by the thick, dark clouds before it had fully disappeared beyond the horizon, and a light pattering of rain began to fall upon us.
The drizzle slowly got heavier and heavier, and when it looked as though it would turn into a full-blown storm; Gennady and I had seen nothing indicating that we would run into any trouble in the tavern, so we decided to finally enter the tavern.
The double doors swung open with a hard push, as the bottom of the wood frame scratched across the floor. The tavern, which didn’t seem lively from the outside, actually had some minor activity on the inside; the thick walls must have prevented noise from leaking out, which led to my earlier assumption.
Regardless, it was almost evidently a facade: the bards playing in the corner evoked too large of a reaction from the early night crowd, and the boisterous laughter of sober men as they chatted only made the scene all-the-more jarring. I made sure to keep my hood up as a few faces inconspicuously eyed Gennady and I from their seats.
The Dwarf waded his way straight to the bar, plopping himself on one of their stools as his hood fell off his head. I wanted to throw it right back on, but it was already too late; the barkeep looked over him once over and nodded.
“What do you want?”
Gennady grinned in response, gesturing past the barkeep. “I want your best whiskey in the house— no, the cellar. And add in a nice strawberry on top. With one of those little pink umbrellas. Make sure to mix it with a good dose of nylos, I want it as bitter as possible.”
The barkeep raised an eyebrow, and slowly said, “That’s… a long way to order our special drink. But I do believe that’s not a problem.” He lifted the small wooden barrier separating us from the bar counter, and ushered us towards a door. “You can find someone able to set you up with your drink inside,” he said.
“Thanks, lad.”
Gennady stepped in first, almost too nonchalantly, as I kept two paces behind him. Isn’t he worried at all? I thought, narrowing my eyes.
We entered a dimly lit hallway, leading to a kitchen with cooks busy preparing more meals than they should have; a roughly dressed man stopped us in the middle of the corridor, and folded his arms. “What are you looking for, Dwarf?”
“Just a Merlion’s special— a nice bitter drink from below.”
The man seemed to accept Gennady’s answer, and he gestured for us to follow him. He led us into a corner of the kitchen, and opened up what appeared to be a cellar door. He lifted the latch, revealing a stairway leading down into a hidden basement.
“There’s only one rule down there, and it’s ‘don’t cause any trouble’, got it?”
“‘Course,” Gennady said, nodding. The man seemed unconvinced until Gennady nudged me.
“Oh— yeah.” I nodded curtly, catching myself from stumbling over my words.
With my affirmation, the man stepped aside and let us enter; we went down the stairs— it wasn’t a long way down, only two flights at most— and reached a doorway. It was far easier to open than the front door of the Merlion’s Alcove, probably because they didn’t worry as much about noise escaping due to the rambunctious cover they had at the top.
I found my nose wrinkling as the door opened; an eclectic of scents ranging from food, to drinks, to drugs, to sex wafted in my direction, with an incredibly pungent smell leading the assault. I reached up to pinch my nose to protect it from the terrible stench, but only heard the clacking of my gloved nails striking my mask.
I cast my gaze around the room and was greeted by a far more naturally raucous crowd than before, with many of the individuals in it partaking in illicit activities. In addition to being set up like a regular tavern with tables and chairs strewn about with men and women consuming various foods and drinks, there were also various other forms of… entertainment available here.
There were men lounging in violet couches creased with golden lines at its edges, indulging in various kinds of substances: I recognized the smell and smoke of tobacco coming from most of these men, yet a few of them inhaled a colorless gas from a pipe which a hunch told me was the source of the pungent smell.
There was also a gambling area set up in the corner of the room, with scantily dressed women serving alcoholic beverages to the men dressed in robes playing with their gold and silver. While this might not seem like an unusual sight, it was, in fact, quite an uncommon one here in Laxis due to the laws banning any acts of gambling.
I conveniently ignored the corner of the room where moans and grunts were coming from, and followed Gennady as he strode through the room without even blinking. I stepped up beside him, and spoke quietly.
“Do you go to places like this often?”
“Yes,” he said, continuing past a table of where an argument just broke out. A man stood up to throw a punch, and bouncers immediately swarmed him and dragged him out of the room. Gennady didn’t bat an eye. “But not for any of the reasons most come here for.
“Ever since I left the Taw Kingdom, I’ve been trying to widen my worldview. They thought I was crazy, but they also praised me as their best, and at the time, I thought that was a compliment. But when they went ahead with replacing me with that Scientist from Xan? I realized perhaps they truly thought me mad.”
“Didn’t you say that your King pleaded for you to stay?” I asked, cocking my head.
“He did.” Gennady nodded as he sat at the now vacated table. “Him and half of the other Dwarves I knew. But the other half? They’re glad I’m gone, and they’re willing to embrace that madman Bertrand to get it.”
I pulled out the chair opposite to him, and took a seat as well. “And what exactly have you been doing to… widen your worldview?”
“For starters,” he said leaning in, “I learned magic.”
I frowned. “What does that have to do with any of this?”
“Magic itself is against the law. Even in the criminal world, it’s not exactly commonplace to find a spellcaster. But that’s the only place you can find spellcasters. The Dark Crusaders have many connections in the underground, and that’s how I first contacted them.”
I drew in a sharp breath, and remembered why I had good reason to not fully trust Gennady just yet; I did not know what his motives were— he told me he just wanted to help me out and return to his Kingdom because of the Abominations, but how much of that was true? What if he was fully aligned with the Dark Crusaders? Could this have all been a trap for me because I killed Victor—
A voice broke me out of my thoughts, stifling my paranoia for just a moment. “Ah, I was told to expect a rather rotund looking man tonight, but I never suspected it to be a Dwarf.”
A rough, older looking man approached the table accompanied by a delicate, young woman. The juxtaposition between the two was immediately visible; the man was dressed in rough leather clothing, giving his already tough exterior emphasized by his scowl an even more weathered look. Meanwhile, the young woman wore more of the fashion I had seen in Laxis, wearing pure, white robes that covered everything but her smiling face. Looking between the two was like looking between the fragile bud of a flower and its sharp thorns.
“Oh, uh, Mr Jack and Ms Lisa?” Gennady greeted them.
“No need for formalities, Dwarf. Hearing it from your kind just doesn’t sound right. I’m assuming you’re Gen?”
“Yes, and this is my companion, Aria.”
I nodded my head slightly at the two smugglers. Jack ignored it, and joined our table without any invitation by taking a seat and throwing his feet up onto the table.
“So,” he started, “what do you two want?”
“We heard you two are the best smugglers in all of Laxis, and we’d like your help to get us out of this city.”
“We don’t smuggle people, Dwarf. It’s too hard, and if you’re wanted by one of the gangs or pirates here, we’d be burning a lot of bridges.”
“Of course. But that’s not a problem with us,” Gennady said, waving a hand dismissively. “We arrived in Luke just the other day. Ain’t got problems with any of the groups in the city.”
“A few days is a lot of time.” Jack stared at us as his brows arched darkly over his forehead. “Or did you think I didn’t hear about what you did at the harbor just the other day?”
I saw Gennady gulp, hesitating.
“That was a minor incident,” he said. Then he glanced down at the table. “Y’know, we haven’t even had anything to drink just yet.” He turned to a passing server and waved them down. “Get me and this lad a drink—”
“I’m not a lad, Dwarf,” Jack spat, cutting him off. “And I don’t have time for this. We’ll be leaving—”
“I think we should at least stay for a bit, Jack,” a soft voice spoke over him. Lisa glanced at her companion with her smile still plastered onto her face. “It would not be wise to turn down a free meal.”
The man hesitated, eyes darting between Lisa and Gennady, then he acquiesced. “Fine,” he said. “But I’m only staying because you asked me to, Lisa. The Dwarf better not get his hopes up that we’ll do this job for him.”
“Hah,” Gennady laughed, “is that a challenge? Ye don’t know how friendly us Dwarves get over drinks.”
“I know all too well, little man.”
Gennady ignored the provocation; he continued his negotiation with Jack as drinks were served to the table. I just sat in my chair, neither contributing to the conversation nor consuming any of the beverages in front of me.
I watched on as both men got drunker and drunker, while the young woman simply sat there, sipping on a glass of wine. I would have thought that getting inebriated would make Jack more amicable to striking up a deal, but it seemed to have only affirmed his resolve.
“—I don’t care about who you are or if you’re a damned Hunter or the King of this country. I told you, I’m not bringing you to that damned Dwarven Kingdom!”
“C’mon, lad—”
“Don’t call me that! The only reason I’m sitting here, listening to you yap your mouth off is because my partner of six years— who usually has a good intuition— thinks you would be worth our time! But now I’m starting to doubt that even is the case anymore.”
Gennady sighed, taking a swig of ale. “Listen,” he said, slamming the mug down. “I can offer you twice whatever the usual cost you charge for smuggling goods our size over the same distance we’re asking you. In fact, you don’t even have to bring us all the way to Taw— you can stop at Puer… no, before Puer, and we can depart from there. I’ll even throw in a good enchanted sword to replace that rusty, old blade there.” He pointed a tired arm at the man’s waist.
Jack’s eyes flashed, looking down at his sword. I looked at his furious gaze, and I also remembered Gennady’s talk of a Dwarf’s craft; I could almost predict what would happen next.
And I did not like it one bit.
The smuggler opened his mouth, spit already coming out—
“You boys are intolerable,” Lisa said, cutting him off once again. This time, Jack looked irritated at his partner’s casual interruption of when he was speaking. But she ignored him, and stared at me. “You haven’t spoken all this time, what do you have to say, little girl?”
I raised an eyebrow at that, but did not comment on how she knew I was a girl. She probably heard about it being mentioned in the same breath as Gennady fighting with sailors in the harbor. A simple extrapolation of events and their associated characters.
“What do you mean by that?” I replied with a question.
“I’m curious,” she said, lowering her wine glass. “You and your companion want to leave this country, and we’re not going to do this for you: what do you have to say?”
“If you reject us, we’ll just have to find others to do this for us.” I shrugged.
“Interesting.” Lisa played with her wine glass, rocking it back and forth on the wooden table, causing a swirl in the lavender liquid inside of it. “And what happens if they all reject you? Suppose we’re the last possible person you could approach to bring us to your destination: what would you do now?”
“Oi, Lisa, what are you doing?” Jack asked, annoyance clearly written across his face.
I peered into the young woman’s eyes, and looked past her smile. “You want us to win you over,” I stated simply.
She did not look away. “...perhaps.”
Gennady, in his drunken stupor, just seemed confused and could not help me. So I drew in a deep breath, and reached for my sides.
“If you were indeed the last people I could approach,” I said softly, “then I would be desperate. If that were the case, I’d offer you this.”
I pulled the coin pouch, slightly loosening its string, and slid it across the table. The yellow glitter of gold coins barely escaped the small opening, but it was enough to get a reaction out of the two.
“A platinum and a half,” I said. “That’s all I have to offer, yet it is more than you’ve made in a job as simple as this, no?”
I saw Jack’s eyes cloud over with greed and Lisa’s smile widen even further. “That is quite the offer,” the young woman commented.
“It is.” I nodded my head.
“We’ll take it—” Jack began, his speech still slightly slurred.
Then I scooped the pouch back up and placed it. “But since this isn’t that kind of a situation, I think my friend and I will be taking our leave.”
“Wait, but…” Jack exchanged a glance with Lisa, and he quickly straightened. His tone of voice changed when he spoke up again. “We’ll do it for… three quarters the price?”
I stood up, but Lisa put up a hand to stop me.
“A half,” she said. “Give us a half of that, and you’ll soon find yourself on a ship heading straight to Jahar’taw.”
I paused to consider this for a second, then I nodded. “Deal.” I brought a hand forward and shook with the young woman.
And with that, it was over. We decided to meet two days from now at the docks, just before dawn. We agreed to pay a tenth of the cost upon our next meeting, and the rest when we arrived in the Taw Kingdom.
Then Lisa grabbed her drunken companion by the arm and left the table. As they did, I could hear Jack whispering angrily at Lisa about how she lowered the price so quickly; he seemed like a man who only cared about money once it was a large enough sum, and I was right.
“Lass, are you sure you should’ve paid them so much?” Gennady quickly asked once they left. “That’s over 70 gold!” he exclaimed.
I rolled my eyes. “I paid you as much just to escort me to Taw, don’t act like it’s a ridiculous sum now that I’m paying someone else the same amount.”
“Well yeah.” The Dwarf scratched the side of his head, frowning. “But you’re paying more than two times what I was offering to pay them. Don’t you think you jumped the gun a bit?”
“No.” I shook my head. “This is the reason why I save my money, Gennady: money is to be spent, and I’m spending it to guarantee my safety. We’re not just buying passage through the sea with that, we’re also buying their loyalty. If they know we can pay them more, they would be all the more incentivized to make sure nothing happens to us.”
“But—”
“And don’t pretend that I’m paying it all,” I said, cutting him off. “We’ll be splitting the bill since it’s for the both of us.”
Gennady’s jaw dropped.
“That’s just for the payment to go to Taw, not for the drinks tonight. That’s on you.”
After all, while we were both going to Taw together, he was the only one to have consumed all those drinks.

Not a fan of this chapter. But whatever. Next chapter will be on October 6th, Tuesday. I'm taking a week break to let my RR rewrite catch up. Sorry for the inconvenience, but I want to at least make some money from patreon, y'know?

A/N: releasing early because I could not share this chapter with the beta readers, because I want to share my April Patreon One Shot with you all here. It is HEL-Verse but contains no humans so it can't stand alone as a post. Finally, I wanted this chapter to drop as soon as it was ready so that I can set about the process of responding to its content and turning my new house into a home. My wife and I have quite a bit to do, and I appreciate your patience. I hope this will tide you over until the next chapter, even if I need to postpone until the 11th. Thank you all for your understanding. Please enjoy.

“So this god of yours, you simply refer to him as ‘God’?” Thantis asked from where he was seated in an armless rolling chair in one of the Event Horizon’s many laboratories. With him were Monsieur and Madame Dupuis, the both of whom considered spending time with the elderly Cauthan much more of a treat than a chore. Of course, Natori Kaczynski was thankful for the favor.
“Oui, mon ami,” Gerard confirmed, knowing the translator in Thantis’ ear would be fine with rudimentary French. The conversation was a welcome distraction as he reviewed the ongoing analysis of the various Cauthan blood samples generously provided by the villagers. “He is God, a single entity, though many cultures call him by another name such as Allah or Yahweh. They all refer to the same, omnipotent deity.”
Thantis took some time to consider the concept while Gerard reviewed a rudimentary rendering of the Cauthan blood protein responsible for oxygen transport. Yvonne smiled warmly at him as he tapped his cane on the metal floor. "If I may, Yvonne."
"You don't need to be so formal, Thantis. We've already broken bread together, so to speak," she said.
"Of course. But this God of yours, do you pray to him as we do our gods?"
"We do," Yvonne affirmed.
"So a farmer in his field would pray to this God for rain?"
"If he were so inclined," Yvonne answered. "Or clear skies, or a fine harvest."
Thantis nodded. "And a smith at his forge?"
"Same God," Gerard confirmed over his shoulder.
"And warriors about to do battle?" the Cauthan asked with ever increasing disbelief.
"Oh you have no idea," Yvonne chuckled. "It would take an eon to number all the humans who have been killed in religious wars between nations who all profess to believe in the same God. The question was always who was right."
"And who won?" Thantis asked eagerly.
"The conflict is still ongoing, though our weaponry has reached the point that open, organized conflict would lead to the destruction of all sides. The three major monotheistic religions of Earth all remain intact," Gerard explained.
"Is that so? I should very much like to meet this God and understand his reasons for pitting his people against one another," Thantis mused. “If they are all still standing that would imply they all have his favor… or that their god does not exist. I mean no offense, of course, I am simply mulling over this curious situation.”
"We don’t know the truth any more than you do, Thantis. But there is a saying in the Bible, the holy text of one of these religions, that God gave man free will. Who is to say who the responsible party is in the end?" Yvonne posited. "But there are many religions of Earth beyond those three. Some people still worship multiple gods, others worship spirits or ancestors. No one knows who is 'correct' though, as you might imagine, most who do worship insist they have the right of it."
"I see. It would be so strange to only worship Seil but I am not human. Perhaps it would make more sense to me then. May I ask which people worship Io? Are there other spirits like her?" the Cauthan wondered eagerly. Yvonne and Gerard looked at one another, at a bit of a loss.
“Thantis, Io is not-” Gerard began before sitting straight up in his chair and stroking his well-groomed moustache thoughtfully. “No, it would be unwise of me to make claims as to exactly what she is, but she not… oh merde, this is distinction without meaning!”
“It’s been a while since I’ve seen you so flustered, mon loup. Please don’t assault your moustache quite so vigorously though, I’ve taken a fancy to it after all these years,” Yvonne chuckled politely at her husband’s bewilderment. “I think all we can say is that Io is not a spirit, given that she was born from our technology, but we don’t know what she is. As my husband is exemplifying quite nicely for us, that’s hardly a satisfying conclusion.”
‘And do believe I intend to keep it that way,’ a confident voice in a thick, Germanic accent filled the room. ‘I know I’m supposed to announce myself but you set me up too well, Yvonne! Oh and who doesn’t love the idea of being a fly on the wall when you’re the topic of conversation? Welcome back to Maran orbit everyone. Thantis, so good to see you are well.’ Io concluded by co-opting a monitor hanging from the ceiling on an arm next to Gerard’s workstation.
“Ah, spirit Io, a pleasure indeed! How is everyone back on Mara?” Thantis wondered.
‘I am with Russell and Veera at the Forge, but as of your departure two days ago all was well. Alice and Lachlan have been radio silent, which means no troubles I’m sure,’ she assured him.
“Very good, thank you. It has been such an experience here aboard this vessel but I yearn for home,” the Cauthan said.
‘And you shall be delivered soon. As long as I have you here, may I make a request?’ Io’s question garnered the attention of all three in the room rather easily. ‘Tomorrow marks the anniversary, in humanity’s calendar, of the day Russell lost his ship and his crewmates… and the day he met Veera. Our dear Admiral has planned a small ceremony but I was hoping you might say a few words or honor them in your own way. Russell is very fond of your culture and I believe it would help ease his pain.’
Gerard and Yvonne glanced at one another with somber expressions while Thantis bowed his head. “It would be an honor, spirit Io. It’s been a long while since I visited the shrine he built for them. Such a peaceful scene it is, yes? An offering to Kel in exchange for their peace will be in order. Fret not, it shall be done. My apprentice will assist me.”
‘Thank you, both of you,’ Io replied earnestly. “But now let us move on to happier topics, if you don’t mind! Gerard, Yvonne, my friends, what have you been up to these last couple of days? Hmm, quite a bit it seems.” Io displayed herself leafing through files and folders, papers and databases, processing what data had been put together on Cauthan bloodwork. ‘Hmm, slightly less efficient than hemoglobin. Perhaps expected given the higher oxygen concentration in the atmosphere and a lower proclivity towards pursuit hunting.’
“Do go on, dear. Steal all my thunder while you’re at it,” Gerard ribbed her. Io looked Yvonne’s way.
“Sarcasm, my dear.”
‘Yes right, of course… I knew that,’ Io replied in a mutter before clearing her throat. ‘Gerard, how about thundering with some information about this study here, hmm?’
“Ah, that one’s still a work in progress,” Gerard confirmed as he saw the project Io was speaking about pop up on his monitor. “It was Yvonne’s idea actually, a splendid one at that. The idea was to see if we could isolate an equivalent to human chorionic gonadotropin in Cauthan.”
“Excuse me, Yvonne, but your mate appears to have suddenly begun speaking another language,” Thantis interjected with mild concern. Yvonne laughed delightedly and explained.
“Not to worry, Thantis, that was simply the technical name for a chemical that pregnant human women produce. It’s part of a complicated system that prepares our bodies to support and carry a new life inside of us.”
“Ah, thank you very much. Did you find one?” Thantis wondered.
‘Yes, did you?!’ Io piled on, her lab coat and clipboard making an appearance. Gerard sighed and pushed his own chair away from his desk.
“We thought we had. Sequencing and examining a protein in detail takes some effort, but simply confirming a yes or no in terms of presence is quite effortless. It was easy to identify one such compound, which we tentatively labeled Cauhan gonadotropin analog, or CGA.”
‘So what was the problem?’ Io asked, settling herself down in her own chair.
“We found the protein in Veera’s blood samples as well,” Yvonne explained. “And before you ask, we checked Gentia’s sample as well as the other samples from females who presented as not pregnant. Veera was the only anomaly, but it is one that we cannot ignore especially given what little we know of her background. We were hoping to obtain some more samples, get a broader picture of the Cauthan blood protein system. Do you think we could arrange for… Io? Are you still there, little light?”
Thantis, Gerard, and Yvonne found themselves quite suddenly without their AI guest, who had, upon reviewing Gerard’s data, immediately beamed herself back down to Mara. She appeared on Winters’ visor with strands of hair hanging over her forehead and sweat dripping down the curve of her neck. ‘Permission to speak with you in private, sir.’
Russell, who was in the middle of the science camp, nodded and politely excused himself. Veera followed behind him and the two of them took Io’s ‘call’ together from the top of a nearby hill. “What’s going on, Io? Something wrong with the ship?”
‘No, but something strange is going on with your wife,’ Io cut straight to the chase. ‘And Veera, please do not be alarmed before we know more. If you feel in good health I am more than certain you are. It’s just that… something curious happened aboard the Event Horizon while we were gone.’
“You’re pretty damn good at saying a lot and nothing at the same time Io, spill it!” Russell demanded, suddenly agitated and angry.
‘I don’t appreciate that tone from you!’ she back talked him, cutting Veera out of the conversation. ‘If I tell you both what I think might have happened and I’m wrong… it would crush her. Just get her to the civilian medical center on the Event Horizon as quickly as you can. I will make all the necessary arrangements.’
“Russell?” Veera called his name nervously as a gust of wind billowed through the grasses around them and scattered the steam rising from far off pools of heated water. He shook his head and embraced her.
“I’m sorry for getting angry. You’re fine, I promise. It’s just another one of Io’s crazy ideas, ok? She wants you to go up to the Event Horizon to speak with one of our healers. They found something interesting in your blood sample. And I emphasize interesting, not dangerous.”
“That doesn’t make me feel much better, but alright. I trust you two,” Veera said quietly, holding him tightly. She was happy he didn’t have his armor on that day; his body heat was comforting.
“Alright. Are you ready to go?” he asked, looking her over. She was wearing one of the dresses he’d made for her a year prior as well as a light cloak to ward off the wind that seemed to be picking up as the seasons changed on Mara.
“Wait, right now?”
“Yep, watch,” Russell requested, taking her by the hand and walking her back to the science camp.
“Lieutenant Winters, something wrong?” Rodrigo Mendes queried, seeing the drawn look on the man’s face.
“I hope not, Lance Corporal. I’m going to need to borrow Private Orlova and your shuttle, and I’m going to have to request that you dog sit for a few hours,” Russell explained, managing a tic of his lips in what passed for a smile at that moment. “The Event Horizon just got back in range for Io to touch base. She found something in the data logs about Veera, something about her bloodwork. I can’t say anymore.”
“And I wouldn’t ask,” Mendes replied, touching a finger to his helmet and selecting Orlova’s channel with his eyes. “Private, we need a rapid ascent to the Event Horizon immediately.”
“Yes sir,” Natalya acknowledged the orders, stashing one of her books in her footlocker, securing the container, and joining them outside a few moments later. “What’s the situation, Rodrigo?”
“I need you to get Ms. Winters to one of the shuttle bays close to the bow of the ship, near as you can to the civilian hospital. Go now,” he commanded.
Natalya looked from her commanding officer to her superior officer to Veera. Not a smile or soft expression could be found anywhere. She nodded, saluted, and began a remote activation of the shuttle’s engines. “Ms. Winters, if you could follow me please?”
“Veera is fine,” the Cauthan replied, adjusting her cloak and heading towards the vehicle which was parked a few dozen yards from the encampment itself. Russell remained behind for a moment.
“There’s a good chance he doesn’t even come back before we’re planetside again, but if he does, you can find his leash, muzzle, and various food for him at our camp, just over that hill there,” he pointed. Rodrigo nodded.
“Requesting you go take care of your wife, sir. I’ll handle this,” the Brazilian assured him before activating his radio again. “Rex, Lipper, the Horizon is back in orbit. I want you two inside the facility to scout out our next point of study.”
Russell nodded silently, appreciative of Mendes’ decision to engage his other two charges with something other than hanging around and wondering what the sudden burst of activity was about. “Thank you, Lance Corporal.” The two men saluted quickly and Russell jogged off to catch up with Natayla and Veera. The shuttle was off the ground mere moments after the main hatch and cockpit doors closed, rocketing off into the sky as Russell wrapped an arm around Veera’s shoulders and took her paw in the other, stroking her fur along the grain. “It’ll be alright, sweetie.”
-----
“Not that there’s a problem, but do you think I could get ‘into the loop’, as they say?” Natori asked via intercom, speaking to Io, Gerard, Yvonne, and Thantis who had all relocated to one of the examination rooms in the civilian medical wing. Io had already arranged the equipment for Yvonne’s specialty by the time they’d arrived.
“I believe we are all feeling the same way,” Gerard said. “Though we have not been acquainted for very long you don’t seem the type to overreact or lead others through deception, Io.”
‘Thank you, Gerard. For the moment the one person I least wish to deceive is Veera, but I will tell you all what I can as soon as- sorry, just give me a moment,’ Io requested, holding her heart in her hands and a book in another. ‘Let’s see, acetylcholine to reduce heart rate, parasympathetic nervous system, lower epinephrine and norepinephrine levels… ok, ok. Is this what people mean when they say things like the blood thundering if your ears or your heart drowning out everything else?’
“Are you well, Io?” Yvonne asked with more than a bit of concern in her voice. The AI turned around to ‘face them’ from her screen.
‘I have been given a small shred of hope that despite everything we know to be true, the deepest and dearest wish of my best friend has come true,’ Io explained both simply and cryptically.
“And what wish is that, Io?” Natori inquired, tapping his fingers nervously on his chair and wishing that he had whatever it was that Io used to consciously lower her vitals. Out of the corner of his eye he watched as Natalya practically skidded into the nearest hangar to the civilian medical wing. Were it not for the breaches in protocol, he would have been impressed.
‘The wish of every woman in her tribe, sir, to bring life into this world.’
Thantis’ can clattered to the floor, and the priest looked ready to follow from his chair. “Spirit Io, are you sure?!”
‘No Thantis, I am not… hence the obtuse language and secrecy,’ she explained with a look of regret, pacing back and forth through her monitor. ‘Madame Dupuis, I daresay we will be in need of your services today.’
“And you will have them, Io, but I must point out the more likely explanation if Veera is, in fact, with child.” Yvonne put forward her proposition cautiously. “It would not be the first time a husband has received very unwelcome news in my clinic, and I doubt it will be the last.”
“Impossible,” Thantis insisted, standing with the help of his now retrieved cane. “I understand we are all individuals of learning, medicine, and reason but Veera is a woman of strong, nay unshakable faith. She would not break her promise to Russell, or to the Mother.”
“Admiral Kaczynski, are you well?” Qul’Roth asked with a puzzled expression on his face. Natori cut his private connection to the medical wing and ran a hand over his brow.
“I am, emissary. Thank you for your concern. I am simply extracting myself from a situation that very rapidly descended into a private matter that is of no import to the operation of this vessel.”
“Very well. As agreed, do you have time to review the mining logs and the current state of the ship’s inventory of raw materials?” Qul’Roth proposed.
“An excellent suggestion, emissary. Let us decamp to my office.”
-----
While Qul’Roth might have been an alien distracted by numbers and figures, Veera was not. The memory of Asha’s ultrasound fresh in her mind, she turned to Russell immediately upon entering the examination room and coming face to face with the Dupuis couple and Thantis. “What did Io see? What’s wrong with my womb?” she demanded fearfully. Winters’ brow was furrowed as he looked around at the small group.
“I’d like to know that too. Io?” he shouted far too loudly for a medical setting. “Now.”
‘Your anger is not doing anyone any good,’ Io warned him.
“And yet here we are,” he shot back, cracking his neck and straightening his shoulders. The fact that Veera’s hand remained in his throughout took a bit of the intimidating edge off. “You’ve kept me and Veera in the dark long enough. Talk.”
Io hung her head and took a deep breath, but brushed some stray hair out of her eyes and complied. ‘I was reviewing Gerard’s work on the various Cauthan blood samples taken over the last couple of weeks, sir. Given the relatively large number of pregnant females from which we have samples, Yvonne and Gerard decided to run a comparative protein screen to see if any sort of pregnancy marker could be identified. They thought they found one until the protein in question also appeared in Veera’s sample… and not those from any other non-pregnant female.’
“Russell!” Veera whispered urgently, wondering if she’d understood Io correctly. He squeezed her hand lightly.
“Are you alright with this?” he asked her. She turned toward him and waved her feathers questioningly.
“What do you mean?”
“You didn’t notice anything odd lately right? You haven’t experienced any of the issues Asha had during her pregnancy, right?” he asked. Yvonne shrugged approvingly and opened up her personal device, adjusted her glasses, and began taking notes. Thantis cleared his throat and walked over to the two of them.
“I will find us some tea and return, should you wish for me to remain. I am not sure how long it would take for Gentia to arrive here. My trip was rather long,” he explained.
“Of course we want you here,” Veera replied, tapping a talon against the metal floor. “And I really need to get some shoes, this floor is cold on my pads.”
Thantis grinned and poked his glasses up his muzzle so they rested comfortably there. “Then I shall return shortly. Spirit Io, might I request your assistance?”
‘Always happy to help with a tea run,’ the AI affirmed. ‘Out the door and to your right, please. We will use the staff break room.’
When the door slid shut quietly behind Thantis, Yvonne spoke up. “Veera, might I ask you a few more questions? Your husband makes a good point, so correct me if I’m wrong, Russell.”
“Go ahead,” he offered, reminding himself that Alice trusted Yvonne, as did Asha and Gentia.
“Thank you. Veera, can I offer you a seat?” Yvonne began, offering one of the normal chairs instead of the examination seat. Russell pressed ever so lightly on her back between her shoulder blades, encouraging her. He followed right behind as she complied and Gerard stepped back to observe. “I’d just like to ask a few more questions so that I do not confuse your body with a human’s. We know so little about your people and hopefully we will be able to find the reason for this anomaly today. You seem to be right as rain.”
“I do feel perfectly healthy, yes,” Veera agreed. Yvonne hummed approvingly and made a note.
“Very good. Have you experienced any shortness of breath lately?”
“Does running count?” she wondered.
“No, my dear. Outside of exercise or normal physical activity,” Yvonne clarified patiently, pleased to be speaking directly in English with a Cauthan patient. Russell clasped his hands behind his back and waited, a stiffness present in his body normally reserved for superior officers.
“No, none of that,” Veera confirmed.
“Great. Any dizziness, nausea, soreness or pain?”
“No.”
‘Tell them about your heats,’ Io cut in, her comment causing Winters to run his hands through his head with frustration.
“Are you fucking serious right now?”
‘Yes.’
“Ma chatounette, I shall be in the labs and do my best to confirm the result. Call if you need me. Best of luck and health to you both,” the frenchman offered, excusing himself politely. Yvonne blew him a kiss as he departed before returning to her examination.
“Little light, please, we all want answers as much as you do. Veera, can you tell me a little bit about what it’s like to be a Cauthan woman? How frequently can you get pregnant? I know from Asha that gestation is about a year. And what are these ‘heats’ that Io mentioned?”
Veera looked up at her husband. He closed his eyes and nodded his head. “This is all your private medical information. You’re a civilian, unlike me. No one can see this unless you want them to.”
“Alright. Well Yvonne, we go into heat once a season when mature. It’s not something I’ve discussed with other females but I presume everyone deals with their own in their own way. All I know about being pregnant is what Asha has gone through. It doesn’t sound very comfortable,” Veera explained.
“No, no it is not for human women either, though the experience varies radically from individual to individual,” Yvonne acknowledged. “Before Thantis returns, can you tell me about your recent bouts of estrus please? That’s the medical term for ovulation and your heat. Perhaps we should stick to it for now?”
“I’d like that,” Veera affirmed, having never felt more self-conscious in her life. “How far back should I go?”
“It would be best to be thorough, my dear,” Yvonne explained. Veera examined one of her claws nervously.
“Alright. Well, I started having them normally when I was about fifteen or so. A couple years later they stopped.”
Yvonne scribbled another note before looking up at her. “Do you know why? Did you become pregnant?”
“No, I was starving,” Veera clarified. Winters placed a hand on her shoulder as Yvonne made another note.
“I assume they have returned, given Io’s comments?”
“Yes. I’m not sure about last fall and winter. It may have happened but I wasn’t uh… I was still a maiden,” Veera tried to explain the concept of virginity without outright saying it.
“I understand, dear,” Yvonne assured her warmly. “And since then?”
“I definitely had one in the spring which was rather extreme.”
‘I’d say so,’ Io agreed. ‘And don’t look at me like that, sir. You’d say so too given the state of your back.’
“Now’s not the time, Io,” he told her shortly. She sighed and shook her head.
‘Just trying to lighten the mood.’
“Thank you, Io. Now Veera, what about summer?” Yvonne requested.
“It was only a few days ago and very mild,” Veera confirmed, causing Winters to cock his brow.
“I guess we’ll talk about that later,” he decided, causing Yvonne to titter with laughter as Thantis picked an opportune moment to arrive with tea, carried in a small cup tray. The Jumper moved to help him immediately, taking a couple of disposable cups with thanks.
“This may be a bad time, but could we discuss these teabags at some point?” Thantis insisted. Russell laughed, hearing and feeling how tight his chest was. The light beige walls were agitating him.
“Sure thing Thantis, no problem,” he agreed. Behind them, Yvonne had decided that it was time to move onto a basic physical. Over several minutes she took Veera’s blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygen content, and other vitals that were readily observable.
“I don’t have much in the way of a baseline,” Yvonne admitted, having only examined Asha in such detail before. “But if I were to use human standards, you are in excellent health Veera. So why don’t we take another blood sample so we can check on our little mystery and then we’ll have a look inside just to be sure.”
“O-Ok,” the Cauthan agreed, not knowing what else she could do given the circumstances. Russell gave her tea as Yvonne prepared her other arm for a blood draw. The taste was strange, but the warm liquid was most welcome, soothing her stomach and driving away some of the chill in the room. “Ow!”
“Forgive me, my dear, but that was all the pain for today,” Yvonne assured her. “Io, if you would?”
‘Of course, Dr. Dupuis,’ the AI replied, using one of the mechanical arms hanging from the ceiling to retrieve and label the blood sample before spiriting it away to the labs for Gerard’s attention.
“Thank you. Thantis, Russell, I would ask you to move to the head of the examination chair, please,” Yvonne requested, seeing that Veera’s outfit would require her to lift her dress in order to have a proper ultrasound. The men did as requested, with Winters placing a kiss at the point on Veera’s head where her feathers met her fur. The doctor washed her hands well before returning, placing the bottle of ultrasound gel under her armpit to get it warmer. “Veera, we will be doing exactly what you watched the other day with Asha. Is that alright with you?”
“Yes, it is. Thank you, Yvonne.”
“Oh my dear, it is a pleasure,” the doctor assured her. “You have been very brave and we will get to the bottom of this one way or another. Your body will almost always tell you if something is wrong. If it does not, you have us now. Now then, let’s take a look, shall we?”
Winters found himself holding his breath as Yvonne turned on the machine and the display crackled to life. Thantis could not help himself.
“By Kel, what is that over there?” he asked.
‘This machine uses sound to safely peer inside someone’s body. The image will not be crystal clear, but it’s a tool humans have been using for more than a century,’ Io elucidated.
“First light and now sound?” Thantis remarked in disbelief. “Is there any force of nature you humans have not conquered?”
“Many, Thantis, but another time, please,” Russell requested. The elderly Cauthan composed himself and cleared his throat, well aware that outside of Veera’s health it was not the time for detailed scientific inquiry. “Yvonne, what are we looking at?”
“Not a whole lot yet,” the doctor replied. “There isn’t much empty space in a normal human body and it seems Cauthan are not much different. Shall we just check in on your heart while we are here? That’s what’s pumping your blood after all.”
Veera couldn’t help but shiver as a new dollop of gel was placed higher on her body and Yvonne angled the wand upward. All four of them studied the beating organ as Io resolved the grainy image as best as possible. Yvonne began her analysis. “Thank you, Io. Everything appears to be functioning normally. The tissue appears smooth and I’m not seeing any lumps or bumps that would indicate cancer or abnormal growth. I acknowledge we don’t even know if Cauthan can get cancer yet, but since they do experience aging I think the answer to that is likely yes,” she reasoned before moving on. Over the next several minutes she checked Veera’s lungs as well as a couple other points of interest that she happened upon purely by accident as they worked their way down Veera’s diaphragm. While a dissection subject or tissue biopsies would be necessary to determine the function of the organs, Yvonne was able to note that, at a minimum, nothing appeared to be wrong at first glance. “Now, your stomach is quite flat but let’s take a look anyway, shall we?” she continued, as though that were not the focal point of the entire ordeal. Her efforts at maintaining a calm environment were appreciated, but Winters could feel his palms sweating and his heart racing. Veera was not faring much better, her feathers shaking about as violently as he’d ever seen. A small, black void appeared on the monitor.
“There it is,” Yvonne informed them, slowing the speed of her movement over Veera’s fur and skin to take a closer look. “Now I have seen several cases of uterine cancer and other abnormal growths in my day and I am pleased to report that I’m not seeing anything like… mon dieu. Mon dieu! Io…”
‘I KNEW IT!’ the AI shrieked. ‘Ich wusste es!’
Russell brought a hand to his mouth, tugging at his cheeks as his untrained eye took in the ultrasound. Yvonne composed herself quickly as Veera’s claws began digging into his arm. At that moment he didn’t care a lick if she drew blood. “Veera, my dear, I would stake my medical degree on the assertion that that little formation you see there is not a tumor, growth, or anything dangerous. I think that’s your… oh there’s another!”
Thantis’ cane clattered to the ground for the second time in less than an hour, sounding like an automatic rifle for how quiet the examination room was. Io was mimicking Russell to an extent, both hands over her mouth as tears flowed freely from her eyes and she shook her head back and forth.
“I’m sorry!” Veera cried suddenly, forcing Yvonne to sit back as the Cauthan leapt to her feet and took her partner’s hands. “I’m sorry, Russell! I didn’t- I promise I didn’t! It’s only ever been you. I promise, I promise,” she whispered. Russell’s body accepted her hands into his, but his mind was somewhere else entirely, his eyes staring somewhere well beyond the examination room and even the hull of the Event Horizon. He didn’t know if he was dreaming or if someone had simply switched his life with someone else’s, but according to the French doctor staring at them both, his wife was going to give birth to not one but two cubs in a year that could not possibly be his. The roof of his mouth was dry. He couldn’t feel his legs. He couldn’t hear anything. What he did feel, however, was Io clocking him in the forehead with a mechanical arm.
‘Where the hell do you think you’re going?!’ she screeched. He blinked and looked around. Somehow he was facing the door of the room instead of Veera. Turning around he found her, supported by Yvonne and Thantis, looking at him with a pitiful and pleading look on her usually proud face that he never wanted to see again. It was so unlike the woman he knew and loved. ‘First Lieutenant Russell Winters you turn around this instant! And if you dare say you’re thinking what I think you’re thinking so help me I will turn this entire ship around just so I can slap you harder with this arm!’
Veera choked back a sob and shook her head vigorously. He walked to her slowly and opened his arms to her, accepting her into a difficult embrace as he spoke to the ceiling. “What am… what am I supposed to think? We don’t even have the same genetic material.”
“I didn’t,” Veera whispered again. Her words tore at his heart and mind alike. For a year they had both adjusted to the idea that children were a thing meant for other couples, for people who had not fallen for someone so far away from their own existence. There was now bloodwork and an ultrasound that seemed to confirm Veera was with cub. An eventuality that affected military men with depressing frequency, one he thought he’d thought impossible, was suddenly rearing its head to dominate the darker parts of his imagination. He couldn’t stop running through names. All seemed unlikely, even impossible, but each one made his blood boil. “I didn’t.”
‘She didn’t, and I have the logs to prove it,’ Io insisted strongly. ‘So if we could all take a seat and a sip of tea, I am going to put forth my thesis and you all will listen. That goes double for you, sir. I know that look on your face and none of the males in the village are going to get a visit from you tonight. Haben wir uns verstanden?’ she demanded, pointing her weapon of choice directly in Winters’ face. ‘I am so sorry, Veera. This should be the happiest day of your life and I intend to prove that it is.’
“T-Thank you, Io,” the Cauthan sniffled, resting a hand on her belly while Yvonne supplied her with a few disposable towels to remove the majority of the gel. “Do you really think I’m-”
‘I believe the evidence is clear and staring us in the face,’ Io replied, abandoning her harsh voice she’d reserved for her operator and switching to a far more comforting tone. ‘Thantis?’
“Yes?!” the elder replied, clearly startled at having been brought into the conversation at all.
‘Thantis, can you tell us how common twins are in your village?’ Io requested. The scholar did not hesitate.
“Exceedingly rare, spirit Io. I believe the last incidence was before I was born. Why do you ask?” he wondered.
‘Because I am trying to determine just how unique Veera’s pregnancy-’ Io broke off mid-sentence to squeal with delight, eliciting a strained but honest laugh from Veera. ‘Oh how wonderful! As I was saying, I am trying to determine just how unique this occurrence is. Respectfully, Thantis, I consider Gentia’s circumstances as well.’
“If it helps, I do not mind explaining further,” he agreed, but Io help up a hand.
‘No need, my friend. But I thank you. Now that we’ve all stopped crying and attempting to do things we would absolutely regret later on, let’s review what we know and have some tea. Tea!’ Io insisted when no one drank. ‘Very good. Now then, we know that Veera has experienced resource dearth and surplus in her life. Unlike many villagers she has experienced famine and then feast. She has been mating and coming into contact with human ejaculate regularly. She possesses hormones in her blood that as of this time have only been found in other pregnant females, and she is pregnant with twins. What does this tell us?’
“I think let’s just skip to the answer, little light,” Yvonne suggested, having done nothing but take notes since Veera had leapt from the examination chair.
‘Facultative parthenogenesis!’ Io declared with no small amount of pride in her voice. ‘Think about it. What’s more likely, Veera running around behind Russell’s back, or her species being capable of self-reproduction when resources are plentiful but the male just isn’t getting the job done? No offense, sir. I’m sure you’re quite fertile.’
“Lord knows that’s probably in the HEL’s records too,” he acknowledged.
‘Sod the records! What do you think of my hypothesis? Veera is an alien, Russell. We have no idea what her body is capable of. You really think she cheated on you?!’
Winters looked at Veera, searching her amber eyes for whatever passed for truth in such a situation. He didn’t know how much was rational evaluation and how much was hope beyond hope that he hadn’t been betrayed. “No, I don’t.”
In response, Veera promptly stood and seated herself in his lap, hugging him and crying that ‘Meylith had answered their prayers’. For all he knew about whatever parthenogenesis was, it was every bit as compelling of an explanation. Thantis was clasping his hands together and simply appreciating the scene, though he joined Yvonne when the doctor stood and declared she would be departing to give them some time and to organize her notes. The death priest promised that he would see them back at the village, and that it was currently his duty to report to Gentia with all possible haste. Veera simply waved an affirmative through her feathers, far too occupied with holding on to Russell for dear life. To say her life had been upended was a colossal understatement.
‘If you don’t believe me, sir, we can always go for a genetic test,’ Io proposed, willing to accept that his acceptance of the situation was likely far more difficult than hers.
“Don’t,” he commanded, shaking his head. “We can… we’ll know the truth when they’re born. I don’t want anyone touching Veera’s cubs.”
“Russell…” Veera whispered sadly into his shoulder, unable to miss his description of her cubs as hers and perhaps hers alone.
“You promise… you promise you didn’t…” he couldn’t quite bring himself to say it, but Veera understood.
“On every god, darling. On my mother’s and father’s spirit as well,” Veera proclaimed, shifting in his lap so she could look him in the eyes. He nodded and kissed her on the nose.
“I guess- I guess that little cabin in the mountains is going to need another room or two,” Russell murmured. Further words proved unnecessary as Veera dissolved into tears along with Io. He contented himself with the fact that they sounded joyful.

2020.09.25 18:01 PeaceSim My friends and I are urban explorers who break into doomsday bunkers for the super wealthy. We snuck into one my father built, and we'd be lucky if any of us escape from it alive. [Part 3]

Part 1
Part 2
Part 4
Part 5
I last visited a mall during an urban exploration outing about three years ago with Joe and Nicole. It was just before Nicole had met Isha, and about a year before Cheyenne had joined us.
It was the largest mall in the region, and I had fond memories of it from its last gasp as a cultural center in the early 2000s. It took my mother thirty minutes to drive me and my then two-year-old brother to it. I remember following her through the massive, snow-covered parking lot into the vast space inside.
People from all walks of life happily bustled between well-stocked stores. A Christmas tree stretched up to the wide ceiling of laminated glass. I delighted at the holiday decorations as my mother plopped me into Santa’s lap. Those were good times.
But, you’ve probably already guessed the derelict state it was in many years later when Joe, Nicole and I snuck in after dark. The factories that left for cheaper labor overseas took the local economy with them. Only a handful of third-rate stores remained, and they were on their last legs. Ceiling tiles were missing. Rubble and shattered glass lay strewn over large areas of the floor. We were there during the summer, but I’d seen pictures of snow falling through the broken overhead windows and covering where the artificial Santa set had once thrilled me.
My present surroundings went far beyond what I witnessed in 2002 and instead represented what I had only seen in movies taking place in the 80s or 90s. Or, at least, they likely did before the floor above spilled a putrid river of decomposed bodies, supplies, and hardening molten metal over its lower level.
This floor was twice as tall as the others, allowing it space for an upper and lower level connected by an escalator. The ceiling was painted light blue – a poor substitute for the sky I yearned to see – and held bright lights. Some flickered irregularly while many others, no doubt affected by the massive hole the molten metal had made in the ceiling, dangled limply and failed to function. I noticed a thin and translucent ladder-like structure extending down from the hole. Dozens of the Chindra who had fallen to B3 ran up it back to B2.
The mall’s stores sold toys, men’s clothes, women’s clothes, lingerie, electronic gear, food, tools, and plenty else. The bottom level had a merry-go-round (I think I rolled off the tarp that covers it earlier), a food court, and a video arcade in which I found myself positioned atop a claw machine. I’d never won anything from one, but Mason had once snagged a giant plush frog that he’d kept in his room through middle school.
“Hey, you!” called a chubby man. He and a curly-haired woman swam towards me through the muck. Both were dressed in grey uniforms. “We’re coming over to you!”
Well, at least not everyone here is a clone of my father. I had every reason to expect them to be hostile and prepared myself to dive back into the water and swim out of the arcade. Hopefully, Nicole and Joe had survived and would be close by.
The woman climbed out of the water and balanced herself on the glass casing of a coin pusher machine a few yards behind me. I rolled my eyes when I saw the face proudly etched into the pieces of silver within it.
The man, not finding a surface that could reliably support him, grabbed onto the top of a mini bowling machine. Their supply belts indicated they were maintenance people.
“I haven’t seen you before. You from B5?” the woman asked.
I nodded. I had access to there, so it was likely an answer that wouldn’t give away that I was an intruder who’d helped cause this mess.
“I didn’t think they let y’all out,” said the man. “The rumors I’ve been hearing are that y’all get pumped full of…well you-know-what, and they keep you on a real tight leash during the pregnancy until you deliver, and then the process starts anew. I didn’t think y’all even had access to the plaza.”
What the fuck, I thought. Oh god.
I recalled the extensive notes on my card about my physical health, and how Isha and I were both assigned to B5. Was “Med/Rep” a place for…fertile women to deliver children? The repairman’s description didn’t exactly make it sound like a mere facility to assist women in pregnancy; I had the feeling that dad’s calculations alone determined whether and when someone got “pumped full of” you-know-what.
The hunter who carried away Isha did so after checking her ID – he must have taken here there after seeing that she was assigned to it. All the more reason to get to her as soon as possible.
“Do you know what this disaster is all about?” asked the woman.
I shook my head, wanting to give up as little information as possible.
“We were here to address an issue with the overhead lighting,” said the man. “But this is absolute hell. Never seen anything like it. Good thing the mall was closed and powered off when whatever this is happened. Otherwise we’d be shocked to death.”
“I need to get back to B5,” I said. “All this flooding has disoriented me…do you know the closest way down?”
“Well, most of the hatches and the door to the main staircase won’t even open when there’s flooding,” said the man. “And, the elevator’s powered down at the moment.”
“There is a door by the restrooms upstairs,” said the woman. “It leads to a maintenance hatch down to B4. It’s on a different system and would probably still work.”
My father’s voice rang out over the intercom before I could respond.
You’re probably surprised to find yourself in this setting, Robyn. Let me give you a quick explanation. This country saw in the 80s and 90s the beauty of a free market left relatively untouched by those arrogant enough to think they should interfere with it. These shopping centers brought together people from across our society. They spawned innovation through competition. They made us wealthy and happy. So, I decided to incorporate consumer culture into Abernathy City.
The denizens of B1 and B2, back when I was still planning on using human workers, would work for a few dimes a day. In their biweekly hour of free time, they would be permitted to spend what they earned down here on the very products they put together. The academics on B4, the medical staff on B5, and the technicians on B6, who earn much more, are still to be the primary customers. Robyn, I’m so close to achieving my dream. All I need is a few more modifications for this whole facility to run like clockwork, and when it does, the plaza will be at the center of its society.
Returning to our present predicament: I’ve got good and bad news for you. First, the good news: based on the responses I’ve found online, your summary has thus far not been lacking in detail. As I said before, I haven’t read what you’ve written yet, but I look forward to reviewing it when this is over! Also, you will be delighted to hear that Mason is alive and well! And, your other friend…Elsa was it? Well, I am delighted to inform you that she’s about to begin contributing to one of the most important tasks of all in a self-sustaining society.
“What is this?” asked the man. “Who’s the boss talking about?”
I feigned confusion even as I fretted over Mason and Isha.
Now, for the bad news, continued my father. You and your friends have been a serious annoyance to me. The damage you’ve caused will take quite some time to repair. I’ve put the Chindra to work on patching up the leak you created, and they stopped the flow of water for now. But, the flood may remain in my shopping center for quite some time.
You may have noticed that the ooze produced by the Chindra has a binding quality to it that assimilates different life forms into one living entity. Well, let’s just say that I did a bit of experimenting with it to produce something that could defend this facility in a situation like this from intruders like you.
This did not sound good. I closed my backpack and tied it tightly to myself. I needed to flee, and I wanted to take my supplies with me.
I’m taking off the kid’s gloves, Robyn. It’s time for you to face your hardest test yet. I really don’t expect us to have another of these conversations. You’ve never held up well against strong adversity. It’s been fun, little bird.
“The hell was that about?” said the repair woman.
As the sound cut off, I noticed a thin red dot on the wall behind me. I followed it as it approached me and then disappeared from the wall.
“What’s that on you?” asked the woman.
I glanced down and noticed that the light now hovered on my chest. I’d seen enough movies to know what was about to happen. I dived into the filthy water and swam away as I heard two gun shots ring out.
When I surfaced at the other end of the room, the man was gone and the woman drifted lifelessly in the water. I pushed her body away from me and noticed two bullet wounds in her; the shots meant for me must have hit her instead.
“You can add poor Ms. Hershing to the list of people who’ve suffered because of you,” said my father – not from the intercom, but from the very room I was in. Was he another clone sent to kill me? “Poor Robyn. Always wanting to do good, always ending up doing harm. You got that from your mother. You certainly didn’t get that from me.”
I scanned the dimly-lit room for him. Did I see something moving near the claw machine where I’d just been stationed? The water shifted unnaturally there, and something solid glided atop it – a submachine gun with a laser sight.
A translucent face gradually turned in my direction. It was my father, but his skin resembled that of the Chindra, in that it heavily blended with the background. “Surprised to see me like this?” he said with a smile. He raised his gun.
I dived again and swam desperately for the arcade entrance as I heard the loud thuds of gunshots. Blood dispersed into the water before me as a shot meant for me hit the corpse of a man I recognized as the owner of another doomsday shelter – the one I’d spray-painted months earlier – and an old business partner of my dad’s.
I surfaced by the Merry-Go-Round, where I gripped a horse’s head for support as I treaded water. The escalator upstairs (not functioning, of course) was on the other end of the shopping concourse. I had to get up there and take the maintenance shaft down. But, it was a long way to the escalator, and the route was littered with wreckage and floating corpses. Hopefully, I could lock it behind me to at least delay this clone and the third hunter from before, if he was still alive.
A ‘thump’ sounded on the roof of the merry-go-round directly above me. “Little bird,” called my dad. He must have climbed up there and seemed to be using a flashlight to scan the area ahead of me. “I know where you’re going. And I’m not going to let you make it upstairs. You could really use a pair of wings now, couldn’t you?” He laughed.
“Boss, is that you!” cried the voice of the repair man. Dad’s flashlight shifted to where he’d waded by the entrance to a toy store. He must have fled after seeing his partner shot.
“Have you seen my daughter?” the clone asked.
This distraction would be my only chance. I knew that I swam for it, I’d never make it to the other side without being spotted. So, instead, I lay on my back, kicked off from the merry-go-round, and floated, doing my best to quietly fit in with the numerous bodies that filled the corridor and only gently kicking to keep myself moving in the right direction. It was hardly a perfect illusion, but hopefully I would avoid detection in the darkness long enough to at least put some distance between me and my dad.
“I think so, a young woman was with me in the arcade,” I head the repair man say. His voice was close; I must have drifted towards him. “Why can’t I see you, boss?”
“Where did she go?” asked my father’s clone. I brushed against another body as I glided further away, measuring the distance by the passing lights on the ceiling.
“No idea,” he said. “Where are you, exactly, boss? All I see is the flashlight.”
I drifted underneath several functioning lights that cast me in greater visibility. I tried not to shiver in the freezing water. Thankfully, my father didn’t seem to notice.
“Then you’re no use to me,” said my father.
I felt myself bump into the maintenance man. “Huh?” he said, startled. “Wait, boss, I think I found-”
Two more shots rang out. The heavy force of the man’s body crashed into me, sending me underwater.
There was no use in pretending any longer. I swam while submerged, pressing onwards despite the weight of my soaked backpack, as far as I could go. When I surfaced for air, only a few shops remained between me and the escalator.
A ring of light appeared around me only a moment later. I dived again as my dad fired. Luckily, a nearby half-eaten corpse shielded me from several shots as I swam closer to my destination. I didn’t have time to process why I recognized the corpse's faded dyed hair.
Bullets hit the water all around me again when I next surfaced. Most landed in the space between me and the stairs; he was trying to block my path. One bullet ricocheted off the wall. The next thing I remember was incredible, reverberating pain as high-pitched noise flooded my head. I grabbed at my left ear and, to my horror, discovered that part of it was missing.
Panic and shock ran through me. I hurried into the nearest store, which sold men’s clothing. I dizzily sputtered in and out of the water. The world spun around me even as I grabbed onto the dry top of a clothing rack and tried to calm myself.
“Clever girl, blending in with the dead like that,” called my father. “But not clever enough. I’m coming for you. We’re about to have a long-awaited reunion.” He was getting closer. I heard distant gunfire from upstairs; perhaps Nicole and Joe were facing a similar enemy.
I needed a place to hide; maybe I could lure him deep into the store and sneak out the way I came in while he searched for me?
I found myself against a wall. How did I even get here? What part of the store was I in? I was bleeding, a lot, and likely to get infected from exposing an open wound to the toxic substance in which I was immersed.
“I’m here, darling! Come to papa,” said my dad. The noise my wounded ear had sent into my head had diminished enough for me to understand him.
I used the wall to push myself along until I found a corridor away from the soaked clothes that filled the store. I realized I had stumbled into a series of dressing rooms. I swam to the last one and locked the door.
“You’ve got a lot working against you, Robyn. Not only am I stronger and smarter than you, but I also know how you think. You’re hiding in here, hoping to draw me in, and to then sneak out the way you entered.”
That was may plan, until my dizziness led me to corner myself. It was only a matter of time before he found me. From the sound of his voice, he was in the area by the check-out counter. I had a few moments as he looked through the store.
“I’ve read your diaries, your emails, your text messages,” he continued. “It delighted me to no end when I learned that you would make a trip out here. If you’d texted the date and time, I would have prepared a welcoming committee. Why did I spy on you like that, you may be thinking? I wanted to see if you measured up to the family name. And guess what? My early assumption was correct. You didn’t.”
I threw my drenched backpack onto a small raised surface for placing clothing as I stood on a cushioned sitting platform that extended from the changing room’s wall. I took out two objects.
“Your grades were painfully mediocre. You didn’t excel at anything – sports, hobbies, you name it. You even lacked your mother’s ability to find a superior marital partner – her only skill.” He was on the opposite side of the store now. If I wanted to escape, now was my chance. But I knew I wouldn’t make it.
“I know everything about you,” said my father. He was at the entrance to the changing area. Luckily, I had a plan. And that plan involved him coming to me.
“I know you had your first kiss with that no-good Sheldon boy after senior prom. You waited over four years after that to get laid, only to lose it in a lousy one-night stand with a guy you’d just met and never talked to again. ‘The most awkward two minutes of my life,’ you texted Nicole the next morning,” he said, in a mocking voice. “Haven’t held a guy for more than three weeks since.”
If he was trying to rile me up, he was succeeding. I’d known about the diary entries, but it pained me to realize that this monster had reviewed virtually every private correspondence I’d ever made.
“It’s no wonder you’ve ended up at a convenience store, spending your free time with a bunch of dropouts and vandals,” said my dad. He knew he’d found me. I heard him push open the door to the first of the three changing rooms. “You always were a disappointment.”
The second door opened. I put on the goggles I’d taken from the hunter earlier as I braced myself.
“I blame your mother for creating you,” taunted my dad. He was in the stall next to me, moving more slowly as he cherished the moment of impending victory before he caught up with his prey. “But after she gave me the male heir I wanted, she became useless to me. She wasn’t worth the trouble it took keep around, much less the trouble of divorcing her. Little bird, you still think, even after all that you’ve seen today, that she died in random accident, don’t you? You inherited that naiveté from her. Not from me.”
I’d never been more furious as rage coursed through my veins. Even so, I composed myself and lifted my arms.
“Our journey is at an end, Robyn,” said the clone. "I hope you've enjoyed the tour so far." He was directly in front of me; only the flimsy wooden door divided us.
I fired three times through the barrier. He made muffled screams. I heard him crash into the water. “You didn’t count on one thing, dad,” I said, kicking the door open.
My goggles saw through the camouflaged skin of my fleeing father. One of the shots had hit his gun, which drifted broken in the water, and the others had hit him. As he feebly tried to wade away, he brushed against the wall and left behind a trail of blood on its white paint as he did so.
“You’re far sicker than I ever realized,” I said as I followed him. “But I knew that you spied on me when I was younger. I knew you were lying when you said that you wouldn’t review my notes until this is over. More specifically, I’m sure the clone I’ve been talking to has been reading them and sharing their contents with you. That’s why I didn’t mention that I picked up a gun from the fallen hunter in the last update. That’s why I wrote that I was ‘unarmed and defenseless’ when I really wasn't.”
I fired a fourth shot into the back of his head. He collapsed into the water and stopped moving. I returned the pistol to where I’d kept it in my backpack.
I’d known that my dad would outgun me in a fair fight. My dad was a gun enthusiast, whereas my only experience with firearms was when Nicole helped me fire a few rounds at a makeshift shooting range the five of us had made out of several weeks’ worth of empty beer cans in my backyard. But I had a plan in case I got cornered, and, miraculously, it had worked.
As I reached the escalator, I heard the sounds of a firefight upstairs. I climbed the steps carefully, staying low and using the metal sides as cover.
I saw Nicole crouched by the front counter of a jewelry store. Her stained, sleeveless white t-shirt exposed the strong arms with which she held the shotgun she’d nabbed earlier. In the back of the store, behind a cash register, was the remaining hunter – yet another clone of my dad. Unlike the one I had just fought, he was fully-visible and didn’t seem to be ‘joined’ to any degree with the Chindra. Did they all retain my real dad’s memories and consciousness? How was that even possible?
He noticed me and let off several shotgun blasts. I ducked and covered my head as the metal around me shook violently. I heard two more shots after that, followed by Nicole’s voice.
“You can come out now, Robyn. I’m so glad you’re alive.” I emerged cautiously to find Nicole standing over the hunter’s whimpering body. “Joe and I have been in a long standoff with him. He didn’t know I was there. Your distraction was all I needed to get the drop on him. Shot him twice in the chest.” She snatched away the dying hunter’s shotgun, removed its shells, loaded some into her weapon, and slipped the rest into her backpack.
“You look like you’ve seen better days,” said Joe as he stood up from behind a sunglass stand. “But I’m glad you’re okay. That guy had me pinned down here for ages.”
“You need to get that treated,” said Nicole, motioning to my ear. She whipped out her first aid kit, removed an antibiotic ointment, and prepared a set of bandages.
“Go ahead,” whined the hunter. A pool of blood extended out from him, and he clearly had no capacity to move. “Get it over with and kill me.”
“Let me have your knife,” I said to Nicole. She looked at me blankly. “Now!” I asserted. She handed it to me. “Hold him down if he tries anything,” I ordered my friends.
I proceeded to drive the blade into the hunter’s chest between his gaping wounds. The hunter screamed in further agony. “What are you doing?” cried Joe.
“How about we make this is long and painful as possible?” I said. “Unless you answer my questions.”
“Robyn, we’re not like that-” Nicole said.
“Do you have all of my dad’s memories?”
“Yes,” croaked the clone. “Up until he last had his brain scanned on B6; about a year before the helicopter accident. After that, I have the memories of the primary clone, who you’ve been hearing on the intercom, and then my own memories once I was created from him.”
“Did you really kill my mother?"
The clone smirked. “I’ve made some mistakes in my life. One of them was waiting six years after Mason’s birth to get rid of her. I should have done it sooner.” He spit blood up at me. Anger coursed through me. I dug the knife deeper into him and twisted it.
“One more question,” I said, as his blood and saliva ran down my cheek and dripped back down onto him. “What does that clone – the ‘primary clone’ – want with Mason?”
The clone nodded through the pain of two gaping shell wounds and a knife protruding from him. “Your real father – the one who died in the crash – has been kept in the same stasis chambers used by the Chindra since the helicopter accident. He isn’t dead, just extremely close to it. The one you saw at the funeral was a clone created just to be used there as a prop.”
“What does that have to do with Mason?” I asked.
The clone eked out a gleeful smile. “Your real dad wants to resume the life he had before the accident. We’ve developed a technology to help him – one that can transfer a consciousness between bodies. Not just create a new clone, but actually cause him to experience his own life continuing in a new body. It is built around the mechanism through which the Chindra queen communicates with the rest of the Chindra.”
“The bodies have to be compatible, and compatible bodies are hard to find,” the clone continued. “They require certain physical, cognitive, and genetic commonalities, and differences in sex and gender can pose substantial obstacles in humans. So, for the time being as we continue the testing phase, we rendered the facility only accessible to those fully-compatible with him. We were soon going to begin soliciting ideal individuals using our access to medical records. If we got desperate, we would even accept someone half-compatible like you, though your father would be reluctant to try a risky procedure just to inhabit the body of an underperforming female. But, luckily, you and your friends brought an excellent candidate right to us.”
“Your father wants to take the form of the son who better resembles him and bears his name. The procedure will upgrade Mason’s current consciousness. The boy will simply be replaced by an improved version of himself: his father. Have I answered all of your questions? Can I die already?”
“Fuck all this,” said Nicole.
“Mason,” gargled the clone as he raised his head closer to me, “will grow up to be just like me. It is inevitable.”
I kicked the knife deep into him with all the force I could muster. The clone finally stopped breathing.
Joe kept saying something to try to calm me down. I didn’t – couldn’t listen. I walked clumsily in a circle before collapsing on the ground.
When I awoke, Nicole had wrapped a towel around my wet form and bandages around my ear. Joe had gathered our armaments – the shotgun, my firearm with four bullets left in it, a fire ax, and Nicole’s knife. Joe, who still had Mason’s backpack, realized it contained Mason’s key card, which will give us access to the bottom level when we needed it.
I shared with them the information I’d obtained about the service entrance to B4 and then the painful news I’d heard about where Isha had been taken. Nicole was as furious as I expected. A sense of urgency drives each of us – to get Isha, to get Mason, and to get out.
My iPad, barely operating and with a crack in its screen, buzzed, and I quickly typed this update just in case my dad (should I say ‘the primary clone’?) still has the ability to cut off the air supply if I fail to do so. Don’t worry – there are no lies or omissions this time around. I hope, dad, that you can forgive that minor deviation from my otherwise thorough notes.
Nicole, Joe, and I are heading down for Mason and Isha. We will stop at nothing, and I recommend warning anyone else still present in Abernathy City to stay the hell out of our way.
